Entry Task We need to finish Part 1 questions & advanced questions, so take those out if you haven’t already turned them in. You have 20 minutes to finish up.

Intro We’ve read that in 1885 European countries met and divided up the continent of Africa. We call this the ‘Scramble for Africa’ Today we will discover what caused this division.

What really caused the ‘Scramble for Africa’? Inquiry: What really caused the ‘Scramble for Africa’?

In your notebook: Divide two pages into quadrants like this:

What really caused the ‘Scramble for Africa’? There are 7 main reasons that led European countries to believe that they had a right, or even a duty, to colonize Africa. Establishing colonies Humanitarianism Military Bases Nationalism Religion Resources Social Darwinism

Work with Your Partner(s) to Take Notes in the Quadrants: What is the definition of the cause? Draw a visual to help you remember the cause. Symbol or picture Explain how this played out in Africa/the Congo. Can you think of any other time when this has been the reason behind a county’s actions?
