Announcing the 62nd Richmond Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition Sunday — October 28, 2018 — 2:00 pm Civic Hall Performing Arts Center — Richmond, Indiana First Place Winner Winner will perform live with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra at the December 2, 2018 concert and receive a $500 cash award! Second Place Winner Winner will receive a $250 cash award! Cash prizes will be presented at the December 2, 2018 concert. Competition Rules and Information The competition is open to instrumentalists and singers in grades 6-12 that reside in Wayne, Randolph, Henry, Fayette, Franklin, or Union counties in Indiana or in Preble or Darke counties in Ohio. Participants can also be students of contracted Richmond Symphony Orchestra musicians. A candidate may enter in only one field in a given year. The first prize winner may not enter the competition the next year. Entry forms, fees, audition recordings, and a signed release form must be received in the RSO office no later than 4:00 pm on Friday, September 28, 2018. An application fee of $15.00 must accompany each entry form and audition recording (cell phone recording, CD, or DVD are all acceptable). Recordings can be mailed, dropped off or emailed to rso@richmondsymphony.org. Each candidate must submit a recording of the audition piece with piano accompaniment along with the entry form. All recordings will be reviewed by the RSO Music Director. Candidates will be notified of their acceptance into the competition by Email or telephone provided on the entry form. Instrumental performers should prepare a 10-minute movement of a major work for their instrument; an orchestral accompaniment must be available. Vocal performers should prepare a 10-minute aria from an opera, oratorio, or section from a song cycle; an orchestral accompaniment must be available. (A second piano will be available for piano contestants on the stage only.) All candidates must perform from memory. There are no exceptions. The competition will be held on Sunday, October 28, 2018 beginning at 2:00 pm. Candidates must arrive by 1:15 pm on the day of competition. Competition times will be assigned upon arrival. Candidates must be present when the competition is completed and the prize winners announced. Winners must be present at the December 2, 2018 concert for the award presentation. The competition is open to the public. Parents, teachers, and friends of competitors are welcome and encouraged to attend. Acceptance into the competition means that candidates agree to video and/or audio taping that may be broadcast by Whitewater Community Television. The decision of the judges is final on all matters relating to the competition. Candidates may request copies of the judges’ score sheets that will be mailed after the competition.
