Context We have been learning about the Civil Rights Movement and people who campaigned for Black Civil rights. Last lesson we looked at Martin Luther King and what he believed in, and some of the events he was part of. What can you remember? This lesson we will look at Malcolm X and compare him to Martin Luther King.

Starter Read the story of Malcolm X’s life and write down as many facts as you can find out about him.

Malcolm X was born into a poor, working class background.

Malcolm X had a tough upbringing and was in foster care Malcolm X had a tough upbringing and was in foster care. He saw first had the violence from whites who killed his family. His family name was Malcolm Little, but when he got into the public eye he refused to go by this as he said it was a slave name given to his ancestors.

This is what probably shaped his political views. Martin Luther King’s dream was Malcolm X’s nightmare. He didn’t believe Kings aims and methods were correct and he was highly critical of them.
