Science Policy Acitivity at the WG E; 22th June 2011 Science-Policy-Interface (SPI): Identification of research needs and knowledge for the WG E Robert Kase, Madalina David and Marie-Perrine Durot contact: robert.kase@oekotoxzentrum.ch madalina.david@ec.europa.eu marie-perrine.durot@onema.fr Science Policy Acitivity at the WG E; 22th June 2011

II) Main Part: Identification of research needs/knowledge for the WG E Structure I) Announcement of the SPI workshop: “Can the concept of ecosystem services help the implementation of the WFD?”   II) Main Part: Identification of research needs/knowledge for the WG E A simple and transparent solution with a quick query.    III) Short selection on ongoing national scientific and regulatory acitivities in Europe: Selection from 6 projects from France, Switzerland and Germany which could be presented in the next October meeting. Part I: Announcement of a SPI Workshop 2nd Water Science meets Policy” Event Common Implementation Strategy (CIS) of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) What? “Can the concept of ecosystem services help the implementation of the WFD?” Where? LOCATION:The Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium, Academy Palace Hertogsstraat 1 - 1000 Brussel ; http://www.kvab.be/ When? START: 13:00 - 29th Sept. 2011, FINISH: 18:00 - 30th Sept. 2011 EUROPEAN COMMISSION RESEARCH DIRECTORATE-GENERAL Directorate I - Environment Seite 3 I Oekotoxzentrum | Eawag

Part I: Announcement of a SPI Workshop Why? Questions at several levels will be raised: - How much do we understand (and need to understand) ecosystem functioning and its links with both ecological status (sensu WFD – sense/interpretation of the WFD) and ecosystem services? - How can we identify the most appropriate methods to value ecological services derived from a more integrated understanding of the linkage between land and water, based either on technical, economic or other social values involved? - Can we use the ecosystem services concept as a pedagogic approach to demonstrate the interdependence of nature and human society therefore helping stakeholders to apprehend their interdependence with nature? Further info available here http://www.onema.fr/IMG/EV/cat1a-14.html EUROPEAN COMMISSION RESEARCH DIRECTORATE-GENERAL Directorate I - Environment Seite 4 I Oekotoxzentrum | Eawag

Part II: Identification of research needs/knowledge for the WG E The aim is to select the most pressing research gaps for WG E, on the basis of a proposed list of EU research topics with the possibility to identify some additional topics. Relevant research outputs are intended to be compiled at the same time. Task 1: To create an inventory of research and implementation needs from WG E Task 2: To identify available research and research gaps Task 3: Improve knowledge transfer and usability of research outputs How?: All three tasks could be achieved with a simple query taking less than 1 hour !!!! EUROPEAN COMMISSION RESEARCH DIRECTORATE-GENERAL Directorate I - Environment Seite 5 I Oekotoxzentrum | Eawag

Part II: Which criteria are intended to be used? It may take the form of a questionnaire that could be sent to each Member State representative and Stakeholder group covering: 1) A „working“ list of relevant research topics from the „Water Science meets Policy Event I” (September 2010) for the WG E, which was attended by 150 participants from 15 Member States. 2) The possibility of adding new research topics of high relevance based on the recent need. 3) The specification of your needs could be ranked according to the labels: Priority, Urgency and scientifically Knowledge; it is possible to quantify these with an easy scoring system (High 3 / Medium 2 / Low 1) 4) The collection of available knowledge related to these topics and making them available, so each topic would achieve also a Literature score to allow a better comparability between needs and existing knowledge. EUROPEAN COMMISSION RESEARCH DIRECTORATE-GENERAL Directorate I - Environment Seite 6 I Oekotoxzentrum | Eawag

Part II: Aims and Schedule of the Query Why? To obtain a clear, broad and transparent overview about the needs and available knowledge for further research prioritization and exchange possibilities within the WG E. An objective is also to feed EU and national research funding agencies at an appropriate timing, e.g. when they launch new research calls . When? The query is prepared but we have to find a suitable time frame between the meetings (please make the selection on your handout with a cross). July-September? October-November? Later? The results would be made available at the following meeting, but an evaluation of the overall outcome from all WGs is planned for May 2012. Part III: Selection of ongoing scientific and regulatory activities in Europe Now it is your choice – please make your selection in the handout on your table: Selection from 6 projects from France, Switzerland and Germany which could be presented at the next October meeting. Thank you for your attention Part III: We intend to improve the transparency and accessability of research results According to the ranking proposed a selection of topics for the next meeting will be made (orally 1-2 presentation / WG E meeting). Do you have other interesting and promising research results or regulation approaches for the WG E (please note them also on your handout or send an e-mail)? or Do you have any questions or suggestions?
