CBPAR Research that equitably involves community members, organizational representatives, and researchers in ALL aspects of the research process, in which all partners contribute expertise and share decision making and responsibilities.

AIMS OF CBPAR To increase knowledge and understanding of a given phenomenon and integrate the knowledge gained with interventions and policy change.

PRINCIPLES OF PAR METHOD AN APPROACH TO STRUCTURED LEARNING BY DOING INVOLVE THE FOLLOWING STEPS OF ACTIVITIES : REFLECTION : WHAT IS THE PROBLEM ? PLANNING : WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT THE PROBLEM ? ACTION : TAKING STEPS TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM OBSERVATION : WHAT EFFECT DID THE ACTION HAVE ? REFLECTION : WHAT NEXT STEPS ? THE GOAL IS TO EXPERIMENT WITH SOLUTION TO AGREED UPON PROBLEMS AND TO LEARN THROUGH A STRUCTURED, ITERATIVE PROCESS IN WAYS THAT CAN BE COMMUNICATED TO OTHERS

CYCLE PROCESS OF PAR ; Monitoring Monitoring Learning Learning Future New Action Present New Action Observation decision Observation Decision Intervention

9 Principles of CBPR (Israel, 2003) Recognizes community as a unit of identity Builds on strengths and resources within the community Facilitates a collaboration, equitable partnership in all phases of the research, involves an empowering and power-sharing process that attends to social inequalities Fosters co-learning and capacity building among all partners Integrates and achieves a balance between knowledge generation and intervention for mutual benefit of all partners Focuses on the local relevance of public health problems and ecologic perspectives that recognize and attend to the multiple determinants of health Involves systems development using a cyclical and iterative process Disseminates results to all partners and involves them in the discrimination process. Involves a long-term process and commitment to sustainability
