Response to Intervention Becca Young

What is Response to Intervention? (RTI) An approach to provide interventions to students that struggle in learning Makes sure no student gets too far behind others Heavily observe students progress 3 tiers

Tier 1- whole class Every student receives high quality research-based instruction Involves differentiation Students are given screenings to identify struggling learners Should not last longer than 8 weeks Students who do not excel in screenings go on to Tier 2

Examples Tier 1 More time to do assignments 15 more minutes instead of 5 Making short-term goals Completing directions given Turning in work to teacher Short quizzes over exams Over specified topics instead of chapters Praise Verbal- “good job” Tangent Rewards

Tier 2 – small groups More in depth curriculum to help with behavior or performance – 9-12 weeks Students still go to regular classrooms Few times a week Usually going over Math and Reading If need are not met, then student moves onto Tier 3

Examples of Tier 2 Fewer transitions Less moving in the classroom Have all work present when students arrive Understanding content before moving on Forms relationship with teacher Feedback Immediately

Tier 3 – individual help May involve Special Education, but not limited to Specific skills are the focus Still go to regular education classes Minimum of 30 minutes a session 15-20 weeks If there is no progress, Special Education is a possibility

Examples of Tier 3 Progress Monitoring Teacher monitors progress Connections Reading Reading program for dyslexia Behavior Assessments Adaptive Behavior Assessment System Teacher fills out

RTI myths Only for Special Education students Allows students to feel like a failure Focus more on procedures than results Label students who do not perform as well Ignores assessments that categorizes students who lack background knowledge and assume those students are Special Ed

Benefits from RTI Early intervention Struggling students have their own pace Special Education students can be identified in early grades Can reduce behavior problems Collaboration between teaching staff
