Our Ice Breaker… On an index card, write down 3 things about you

What is Behavior Management? Set of techniques designed to increase desired behaviors 1 Essential for well defined classroom management 2 Includes: Rules (including daily procedures and routines), Systems, and Interventions 3

Rules and Consequences: Plan to respond consistently to student misbehavior

Identify and post three to six classroom rules that will be used as a basis for providing positive and corrective feedback.

Important: Decide who will help develop the rules State the rules positively Rules should be specific and clear Plan to TEACH your rules using positive and negative examples

Enforcing the Rules: Develop a plan for correcting early-stage misbehaviors. Proximity Gentle verbal reprimand Private conference with student Restitution

Develop Consequences for Committing Rule Violations

Be consistent! For corrective consequences to reduce habitual behavior you MUST implement consistently. The goal is to develop clear expectations of what behaviors are unacceptable.

Be Fair! Make sure the consequence fits the severity/frequency of the behavior.

Be Unemotional! Do not allow students to play on your emotions; (frustration, hurt, and anger) Your anger may reinforce the behavior Student gains a sense of power

Is your classroom layout important? ABSOLUTELY!

Decide on a signal you can use to immediately quiet your students and gain their full attention. Examples?

Greet students at the door by name Have a short task for students to work on as they arrive. Use a seating chart to take attendance Develop a procedure/consequences for dealing with tardiness

Procedures for during class: Materials Clearly communicate what materials they are expected to bring to class Develop procedures that will allow a student to get whatever he/she does not have Develop a procedure for hall passes (how, when and why) Develop a procedure for handing in/out materials (Create a system that allows students to track their assignments)

Procedures for Absences: Decide how you will deal with missed work Set up two baskets in the classroom- label one “Missed assignments”, and the other “Due Assignments” Keep folders in the baskets with the dates they were assigned and when they were due

Procedures for End of Class and Dismissal: Leave enough time at the end of each class to ensure that things end on a relaxed note Allow time for reminders about homework or other up coming projects While the students are organizing and packing up give positive feedback to the class as a whole

Co –Teaching: an instructional style intended to support students in diverse classrooms. personal compatibility is the most critical variable for success.

Communication and Collaboration in co-taught classrooms The Platinum rule: Treat others the way they want to be treated.

Tips for Effective Communication Verbal and non-verbal signals should be congruent. Use the appropriate communication tool (i.e. face to face, phone/text, email, etc.) Reflect on your motive for confronting Consider when and how to confront your partner caringly
