Mechanisms of Cellular Transport Continued…
DON’T FORGET!!!!!! A. Diffusion = movement of molecules from HIGH to LOW (passive) B. Osmosis = movement of water molecules from HIGH to LOW (passive) Now, then….let’s learn some new types!!
C. Facilitated Diffusion The movement of particles from areas of HIGH concentrations to areas of LOW concentration with the HELP of a TRANSPORT protein. Like regular diffusion, this is a type of PASSIVE transport and does NOT require energy! Animation: How Facilitated Diffusion Works
D.Transport Requiring Energy (Active Transport) What type of transport is represented by the following picture? Active What energy is being used? ATP___ In which direction (concentration gradient), is the movement occurring? ___Against Color the internal environment of the cell yellow. Color and Label the transport proteins red and the substance being moved blue.
Answer Blue and red
Na+ K One type of active transport is called the _Sodium Potassium pump which helps muscle cells contract. This pump uses _Proteins_ to move ions _against the concentration gradient. The protein that is used to pump the ions through is called a Transmembrane or (Integral) protein and it changes its Shape to move the ions across the cell membrane. Label and color the carrier proteins red and the ions green.

D. Active Transport Movement of particles AGAINST the concentration gradient from areas of LOW to areas of HIGH concentration. This does require ENERGY!! Example: Na+/K+ Ion Pump http://www.brookscole.com/chemistry_d/templates/student_resources/shared_resources/animations/ion_pump/ionpump.html
