Ethical speech How do you understand “ethics” in public speaking? Give an example, if you can, of a speech that is not ethical enough.

How do we introduce?

How to improve this self-introduction? My name is Li Hua. I was born in Dalian, Liaoning province in February 1977. I started school in 1984 when I was seven. I studied in Guangming Primary School from 1984 to 1990. After that I went to No.62 Middle School of Dalian and graduated this summer. The main subjects I studied at school included Chinese, maths, English, physics, chemistry and computer. I like English and computer best and I am very good at them. Last year I won first prize in the school computer competition. In my spare time I enjoy listening to popular music and collecting stamps. My favorite sports are swimming in summer and skating in winter.

1. What to talk about Choice of the points: focus on one or two events that have helped define who somebody is E.g. an incident from your childhood; the story behind a personal photograph; a few of your typical behaviors; an important lesson Colorblind; softball

2. Ways of being impressive Suspense Dramatic elements Creative methods Kiyomi; dancing; orange

3. Organize your speech Introduction---- attractive and revealing Body---- story(chronologically); aspects(more complicated, but with better effects); Limit the main points; keep the unity of every point; transition (at the beginning of every point) Conclusion: dramatic,thought- provoking, impressive. Danny?

Now can you rewrite this self-introduction? Group work: work in group of 5, turn the self-introduction passage into a one-minute speech that is more interesting and attractive. Put the speech in written form. 10 minutes’ prepare

Extemporaneous speaking Reading word for word? Speaking without preparation? Be very familiar with your contents and especially structure; the major points and supporting materials are more important than the precise language. Brief notes; key terms or phrases; large enough; double-triple space; use the fewest notes possible;

Practice extemporaneously Write a brief note for yourself and prepare for a one-minute speech based on the script.

Rehearsal It takes a process to be better When you rehearse, do it loud Get yourself an audience and ask for feedbacks Pot 1 2

Presentation Posture: comfortable; but upright Arrange your notes Take a look and smile first Gestures only come naturally Eye contacts Variety of voice

Now you try Each group elect one representative, he will first present the speech in group; group members provide their suggestions. The representative rehearses again, and then give the 1-minute speech extemporaneously. 5 minutes to prepare.

Homework: Arrange each of the sequences below in order, from the most abstract word to the most concrete word: Farm corps, agriculture, vegetables, potatoes, produce Mona Lisa, art, painting, creative activity, portrait Automobile, vehicle, Ferrari, transportation, sports car

Each of the statements below uses one or more of the following stylistic devices: metaphor, simile, parallelism, repetition, alliteration, antithesis. Identify the device (devices) used in each statement. We must be candid, consistent, and confident. Our opinions have no permanence; like autumn and winter, they gradually pass away. Government of the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth. The task is heavy, the toil is long, and the trials will be severe.
