Effective language teachers

What are the characteristics of effective language teachers?

No Secret Recipe There is no “secret recipe” for being an effective teacher. (Coombe, 2014) Different teachers have different styles that work for them. Ingredients will help you create your own recipe.

Characteristics of Highly Effective Teachers Delivery Environment Content Attitude

Delivery Uses compelling ways to deliver contents and engage learners Maximizes student participation/ involvement in the lesson Monitors the participation and involvement in classroom activities/ tasks. Participates in activities Speaks at the level of students’ comprehension Use of L1 and L2 supports learning and understanding. Explains in a way that is easy to understand. Listens to learners’ input Interactive Focus on quality not quantity

Affective Filter Hypothesis Environment blockage can be reduced by sparking interest, providing low-anxiety environments, and increasing the learner's self-esteem. Affective Filter Hypothesis certain emotions, such as anxiety, self-doubt, and boredom interfere with the process of acquiring a second language (Krashen, 1982)

Environment Low stress/tension environment Positive/ happy/ motivational setting Environment facilitates interaction Environment facilitates peer scaffolding opportunities Allows for teacher to monitor all students Students are surrounded by comprehensible English input Strong positive rapport with students Strong rapport and comfort between students The classroom atmosphere is often a direct reflection of the teacher’s attitude

Content Appropriate content for the students’ level Content relates to the students’ interests and experiences Focus on clarity Visually appealing Accurate language Content is contextually appropriate Visuals assist understanding (pictures are clear, have a direct link to understanding) Videos are relevant to the lesson and not too long (be careful of the zombie effect!)

Attitude Appears passionate, positive, and motivated Appears to genuinely care about the learners Has a positive, can do it, attitude Encourages rather than discourage/ force Motivates students by being a role model Is flexible Is approachable and friendly Respects students Confident

BONUS- General Likeability Honesty Humble Empathy Sense of Humor Positivity Politeness Anger Management Appearance (Sanders, 2005)
