Presentation transcript:

The Power of Language “Language is one of the most powerful tools available to teachers. It permeates every aspect of teaching and learning. We cannot give a lesson, welcome a child into the room, or handle a classroom conflict without using words. Children cannot do a science observation or learn a classroom routine without listening to and interpreting their teacher’s words. And what they hear and interpret-the message they get from their teacher-has a HUGE impact on how they think and act, and ultimately how they learn.” (Denton, p. 1)

The Power of Language Teacher Language The professional use of words, phrases, tone, and pace to enable students to engage in active, interested learning and develop positive behaviors.

The Power of Language How? “Language actually shapes thoughts, feelings, and experiences. It produces fundamentally new forms of behavior.” -Lev Vygotsky How? Language molds our sense of who we are. p. 3-4 “Don, you really put your heart and soul into singing! Would you like to learn more about it? I have some ideas.” Language helps us understand how we think, work, and play. p. 4-5 “You’re a good writer” vs. “You used a lot of juicy adjectives in your story. I really get a sense of how your character looks and feels.” Language influences the nature of our relationships . p. 6 Building trust between teachers and students Building positive relationships between students and their learning

Goals of Teacher Language Help students develop self control. Build a sense of community in the classroom. Help children gain academic skills and knowledge. Group One Developing Self-Control (pages 7 and 8) Group Two Building a Sense of Community (page 8) Group Three Gaining Academic Skills and Knowledge (pages 9 and 10) Think about how teacher language helps achieve this goal. Look for examples of language that could support your goal.

Goals of Teacher Language As a team, we will create a chart with examples of language that help meet the goals of teacher language.
