COUN 2: College Success Strategies 11/16/2018 What Is Success? What does “success” mean to you? Getting all A’s and B’s while working a full-time job Making 2 free-throws to win the basketball tournament Parenting 2 great kids and still making the dean’s list Being the first person in the family to earn a college degree “Outer Success” Focus on learning instead of just getting good grades Major in a career field because it’s your passion Discover your personal values “Inner Success” Professor Michael Ngo

COUN 2: College Success Strategies 11/16/2018 Definition of Success “Success is staying on course to your desired outcomes and experiences, creating wisdom, happiness, and unconditional self-worth along the way.” Do you have the same definition of success? Take 5 minutes to write or draw your definition of success Success Worksheet Success Worksheet Professor Michael Ngo

COUN 2: College Success Strategies 11/16/2018 The Power of Choice “Positive beliefs lead to effective behaviors. Effective behaviors lead to success.” For example: After a disappointing test score, a struggling student thinks, “I knew I couldn’t do college math!” This belief will likely lead the student to miss classes and neglect assignments These self-defeating behaviors will lead to even lower test scores, reinforcing the negative beliefs Professor Michael Ngo

COUN 2: College Success Strategies 11/16/2018 Write a Great Life Journal writing is a way to explore your life in depth and discover your best “self” Self-awareness will enable you to make wise choices about what to keep doing and what to change Journal writing is ‘free writing’, but through On Course, it’s guided that allows you additional insights about you All journal entries are located on the website: Julielaw.weebly.com Professor Michael Ngo

Journal Writing Guidelines COUN 2: College Success Strategies 11/16/2018 Journal Writing Guidelines Read the directions/questions for each journal…make sure you know what it is asking you. If you are not sure ask a classmate or me. Be spontaneous – write whatever comes to your mind. This is not an English composition course. Be honest – this will allow you to discover yourself and your success Be creative – Express your creative self. Add your favorite quotes, poems and sayings. Use color, clip arts, photos, and drawing Dive deep – be specific and provide examples to the point where the reader won’t have any question Professor Michael Ngo

Professor’s Journal Writing Preference COUN 2: College Success Strategies 11/16/2018 Professor’s Journal Writing Preference All journal entries must be: Typed or hand written Either provide hard copy or email as an attachment (Microsoft Word Document only) and in subject of email state: YOUR NAME AND ASSIGNMENT Journals are due at the beginning of class on the due date or you may submit them earlier No late journal entries will be accepted… being absent is not an excuse Professor Michael Ngo
