Agenda 3/11/2013 Today: Pass out weekly agenda and 10.1 Reading Answer Bellringer on a half sheet of paper You DO NOT have to write the question! Work on Leaf Lab Take Notes on Chapter 10 HW: Read and Take Notes on 10.1, and answer questions 1-5

Bellringer In the late 1700’s a French scientist named Jean Baptiste Lamarck was amazed by many similarities amongst the animals he studied. He determined that if an environment changed, the animal would have to change its’ behavior to survive. For example, if a giraffe stretched it’s neck long enough, a “nervous fluid” would flow into its’ neck and make it longer. It’s offspring would then inherit the longer neck. Do you agree with Lamarck’s proposal? Why or why not? Lamarck Write answer on half sheet. *Don’t have to write question!

Leaf Lab You may only take 1 leaf at a time. We will circulate the room so everyone gets a chance to grab a leaf NO JUMPING, CLIMBING ON FURNITURE, PUSHING, ETC You may move furniture and stand on your “tippy-toes” to grab a leaf Person with the most leaves wins!

Results People with 3 or less leaves stand in a group People with 4 or more leaves stand in a group

Results Group with 4 or less leaves did obtain enough food to live. Your group does not survive. People with 5 or more leaves ate enough food to live. You group survives!

Predict Write prediction on the half sheet! If the group that survives eventually reproduces and has children, would you expect the average height of their offspring to be: shorter taller or the same as the original class average? Why?

Theory Vs. Belief Theory: a well-supported explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of knowledge that has been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment.

Theory Vs. Belief Belief: a psychological state in which an individual holds a preposition or premise to be true.

Theory vs. Belief Scientists can only collect data and make inferences about the natural world. As scientists we have no way of collecting data from the supernatural world. In this class we learn science, and interpret data, but we do not intend to make you “believe” something or to contradict your own beliefs.

Leaf Lab Summary Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection Considered to be the most unifying theory in biology One of the most scientifically supported theories Explains how populations of species become better adapted for their environments There are many misconceptions about the theory amongst the general public.

Evolution of Cars Ford Escape 2000

Evolution of Cars Ford Escape 2004

Evolution of Cars Ford Escape 2008

Evolution of Cars Ford Escape 2012

Evolution of Cars Did the 2000 car become the 2012 model?

Evolution Evolution = change over time Individuals do not evolve. Ford 2000 Escape did NOT become the 2012 model. Evolution occurs over generations. Offspring conceived sexually will not be identical to the parents.
