Indonesian Mountainous Region

Introduction Indonesia is made up of thousands of small islands located in south-east Asia. It experiences many natural disasters. Indonesia’s main city is called Jakarta and is located at coordinates 6.2000° S, 106.8000° E Population of Indonesia: 237,424,363 Percentage of world Population: 3.49% Number of islands: 17,508

My Indonesian plant: Nepenthes bicalcarata This plant is interesting because it doesn't just eat insects it employs them as protection. This pitcher plant has hollow shoots which provides the perfect home for an ant species known as Camponotus schmitzi. When some sort of species attacks the plant, the ants swarm out and fight to defend the Nepenthes Bicalcarata, although it also can bring insects to the plant, clean it, and much more. But in turn, both species need each other. For example, a scientific test has shown that while the Nepenthes soil with ants is full of nutrients and the plants live longer and stay healthier, whereas the soil without ants don’t live longer and are poor in health. The ants benefit from a lot of things, for example a plant will grow little shoots that the ants feed on. Pitchers get to about 25 cm, but the plants can get enormous, with stems thicker than your thumb, and climbing over 50 meters. The Nepenthes lives at elevations of 0-950 metres. This plant is native to Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam. Kingdom: Plantae. Phylum: Tracheophyta. Class: Magnoliopsida. Order: Nepenthales. Family: Nepenthaceae

My Indonesian animal: The Indonesian Mountain Weasel The Indonesian Mountain Weasel prefers to thrive at and above elevations of 1,000 metres (3280 feet). Musang gunung is ‘mountain weasel’ in Indonesian. It is so genetically close to the Siberian Weasel, it is assumed that their lifestyles and behaviors are much alike. The Siberian weasel (and we assume the Indonesian mountain weasel too) makes its den in the hollows of trees, under rocks, and will often take over a rodent’s burrow that has been deserted. It often will line its nest with leaves and feathers, sometimes even using its own fur. Weasels in general are nocturnal animals and will not move often during the day. They seem to be solitary animals, only keeping company when they are very young. There aren’t any listed predators for the weasel, but they are extremely fierce and probably wouldn’t be worth the effort for many major predators. Kingdom: Animalia. Phylum: Chordata. Class: Mammalia. Order: Carnivora. Family: Mustelidae.

Indonesian religions map

Indonesian religions map As you can see, Catholicism is only worshipped on one island, and modernist Islam is a major part in Indonesian religion. at the top of Indonesia no religion is celebrated (the white part).

Map of Indonesia

Indonesian natural disasters Indonesia has more than 400 volcanoes and they have approximately 150 active volcanoes which is 75% of the Earth's active volcanoes and this is because Indonesia is located in the Ring of Fire. Indonesia is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to natural disasters. A magnitude of 4.1 earthquake on the richter scale struck Yogyakarta, Indonesia, on April 2, 2014. The epicentre was located at coordinate 7.836°S 110.463°E with a depth (calculated) of 13.8 km. Indonesia is on the tectonic border of the eurasian plate and the indian australian plate which means that it will get a lot of earthquakes. The most recent volcano eruption was the Sangeang Api volcano on the 31st of May 2014. The ash cloud reached approx 19.3 km high (approx 12 miles).

Conclusion Most people don’t give a second thought about Indonesia but given that it is so close to Australia we should think about it more. It is a fascinating place to research and visit. I hope you learnt something from this presentation.

Thanks for watching!
