Relative Clauses Camellia Jane

Relative Clauses – ‘extra information' clauses 94 Relative Clauses – ‘extra information' clauses Two types of relative clause Differences of Type 1 and Type 2 (FOUR Differences) - The use of “comma” - The use of “that” - Can/Cannot leave out “who”, “which” (and “that”) - The use of “whom” One similarity of Type 1 and Type 2 -- whose & where

94 Type 1 In type 1,the relative clause tells you which person or thing (what kind of person or thing) the speaker means: Cannot use commas Eg. We know him who lives next door. Can use “that” Eg. Jack is waiting for his boss that speaks Chinese. Can leave out who/which/that when it is the object. Eg. Ann met Jack in office who/that Jim knows.

94 Type 2 In type 2, we already know which thing or person is meant. And the relative clauses give us extra information about the person or things. Eg. My brother told me something about his new house, which is located near to our college. Use commas before who/which… Cannot use “that” to replace who/which. Cannot leave out who/which. Can use whom (when it is the object). Eg. Yesterday I met Bella, whom I have not seen for a year.

94 Similarity In both two types of relative clause, you can use whose and where. Eg. Type 1: We found April whose car had broken down. Type 2: We found April on the way back home, whose car had broken down. Type 1: I have told you the place where I am going to visit. Type 2: I am travelling to London, where my cousin lives now.
