- Acknowledging intellectual property (bibliography and citations) Referencing - Acknowledging intellectual property (bibliography and citations)

Why acknowledge intellectual property? As stated in the St. Columba’s VCE booklet (2016): A student must ensure that all unacknowledged work submitted for assessment is genuinely her own. A teacher may ask the student to demonstrate her understanding of the task at or about the time of submission of the work. If any part or all of the work cannot be authenticated, then the matter will be dealt with as a breach of rules.

Why reference? There are many different resources used when writing essays or researching a topic. When you use information, ideas and quotes gathered from these resources, you must acknowledge where the information came from, in the form of a bibliography A bibliography is a detailed list of the resources used in an essay or research topic. The reasons for listing or 'citing' all references are to: acknowledge your sources allow the reader to verify the information provided provide information so the reader can check your sources (St. Columba’s College Planner 2017, p.17 )

What to reference/cite? According to Gabe (n.d): All sources of information used in writing your essay must be referenced. You use citation to: Acknowledge others’ work in your work Refer to them individually (surname/organisation, year) in a body of work Using a direct quotation (surname/organisation, year, page) Citations are used for ideas, images and quotes Example
