No Food and Drinks in the Science Lab! bad idea!

Keep your work station clear of clutter and no horseplay in the lab! What might happen if you don’t?

Smart Scientists wear safety goggles to pour chemicals or when heating chemicals with a bunsen burner! What about wearing just regular glasses?

Tie back long hair and don’t wear baggy clothing Tie back long hair and don’t wear baggy clothing! Wear goggles, gloves and a lab coat when necessary, and ALWAYS wear shoes! Yes! No!

Never leave your lab experiment unattended, especially when heating chemicals with a burner! What else should you keep in mind when heating chemicals?

To safely smell a chemical WAFT the air towards you with your hand…NEVER smell a chemical directly as it can burn your nose! It is ok to smell flowers like this…. But smell lab chemicals this way!

Dispose of broken glass in the marked container and dispose of all chemicals as per teacher’s instructions. Not all chemicals can go down the sink or in the garbage!

A Fume Hood is used to experiment with noxious (poisonous) or reactive (explosive) chemicals. A fume hood has a fan, light and explosion-proof window to keep this scientist safe. A fume hood is NOT a place to store items!

When heating a substance in a test tube over a flame, always place the test tube at a 45o angle. Why wouldn’t you want the test tube straight up? Where else should you NOT point the test tube?

First Aid-Heat Burns To avoid burns, never touch hot glassware. Q. How can you tell if glass is hot? A. move the back of your hand close to the glassware to sense the heat. Remove jewelry & immerse burned skin in cool water. Q. Why not ice? Why no jewelry? A. Ice damages the skin by freezing the living cells and you take off jewelry in case the area swells. Do NOT cover burns with butter or creams. Q. Why? A. Creams seal in the heat so the skin keeps “cooking”!

First Aid-Chemical Burns When burned by an acid, treat the area with a dilute base. When burned by a basic chemical, treat the area with a dilute acid. Q. What does dilute mean? A. Dilute means that the acid or base is weak and has a lot of water mixed with it. Q. Why use acid on base and vice versa? A. Acids and Bases neutralize one another.

First Aid-Eye Safety Always wear safety goggles to prevent splashes of chemicals into the eyes. If anything enters the eye, wash at the eyewash for 10-15 minutes while holding the eyelid open. Q. Should you remove contact lenses if something gets into your eyes? Why? A. Contact lenses can trap the chemical so get them out!
