International Planetary Data Alliance (IPDA): A Standards Initiative for Building Compatible Archives Dan Crichton, NASA/JPL Reta Beebe, New Mexico State University Joe Zender, ESA/ESTEC Steve Hughes, NASA/JPL Yasumasa Kasaba, ISAS/JAXA

Overview NASA/PDS and ESA/PSA have worked closely together to coordinate archiving activities for current missions (e.g., Huygens, Mars Express, Venus Express) This has led to ESA PSA/NASA PDS collaborating on an international strategy for planetary science data archiving to: Give scientific communities world-wide access and services to data archives built from similar standards Reduce cost of archiving and distributing science data by collaborating and sharing standards Ensure reusability of science data across agency/mission/instrument boundaries Coordinate archiving processes and plans Improve and increase services offered In 2006, the International Planetary Data Alliance was established which includes participation from major space agencies around the world

Members ASI (Italian Space Agency) BNSC (British Space Agency) CNES (French Space Agency) DLR (German Space Agency) CNSA (China Space Agency) ESA (European Space Agency) ISRO (Indian Space Agency) JAXA/ISAS (Japan Space Agency) NASA (U.S. Space Agency) RAS/RKA (Russian Space Agency)

Organization Proposed to be under the auspices of COSPAR Steering Committee to be held at 2008 COSPAR Meeting Steering Committee with Representatives from all Major Space Agencies SC oversees IPDA projects Definition of requirements Data Model Constructions etc IPDA Organization Model

Architecture IPDA Reference System Architecture is decomposed into three core pieces: Process Architecture Describes a set of standard processes for planetary science archive data systems Data Architecture Describes a set of data standards for planetary science archive data systems Technology Architecture Describes a set of standards for enabling interoperability between planetary science archive data systems Each of the above will provide a set of deliverables to guide system development and operations IPDA Architecture Framework

International Data Standards Standards Structure (IPDA and Agency Level) Data Object Model Identify the existing subset of standards used by PDS/PSA which are appropriate for internationalization PSA based its standards on the PDS Data Standards Develop a mechanism for management of the standards at an international level (e.g., coordinated through the IPDA Archive Data Standards Project) Align existing agency standards and processes with the internationalization

Technology Standards Definition Move towards interoperability and data sharing based on a common data sharing protocol ___________________ Venus Express (ESA) Hayabusa (Japan) Chanrayan-1 (India) Various Missions (NASA)

IPDA Near-Term Deliverables IPDA Deliverable Definition IPDA Project Leader Data Model Define a high level data model for planetary science data products (e.g., PDS Planetary Science Data Model) IPDA Core Requirements/Archive Standards Steve Hughes, NASA Data Dictionary Define a core data dictionary of data elements and values to be used to annotate planetary science data products Data Formats Define a core set of data formats for planetary science data products Grammar/Structure Define a standard structure for documenting the metadata associated with a product (e.g., ODL) To be discussed at July Meeting @ Caltech TBD Archive Organization Define a standard layout for an archive and associated repository Metadata Query Protocol Define a standard protocol for querying remote agency planetary science data catalogs of their holdings Interoperability Prototype Jesus Salgado, ESA Archive Process Define a standard “process” for planetary archiving (e.g., Archive Process Guide)
