The Brain and the Arts Dr. Paul A. Rodriguez

The Arts Are Basic To The Human Experience The Arts Develop Cognitive Growth in: The perception of relationships. An attention to nuance. Perspective problems can have solutions, and questions leading many answers. The ability to shift goals in process. The permission to make decisions in the absence of a rule. The use of imagination as the source of content.

Impact Of The Arts On Student Learning and Behavior Arts Education and Arts Integration Is Music Inborn? SAT Scores-higher as a result of taking art Disaffected Students – reaching students not otherwise reached Different Learning Styles-a way to appeal to students who are not engaged School and Classroom Climate-transforms the environment for learning. All cultures sing and associate certain meanings and emotions with music Infants use music as a retrieval cue. They can also categorize rhythmic and melodic patterns and preschool children spontaneously use music in communication and play.

Effects of Listening to Music Versus Creating Instrumental Music How the Brain Listens to Music The Benefits of Listening to Music Cells in the cochlea respond to different frequencies and their signals are mapped out in the auditory cortex. Music can be imagined because people have stored representations of songs and sounds. Listening to music can boost immune function in children. Music can directly influence blood pressure, pulse, and the electric activity of muscles. Improve spatial-temporal reasoning.

“Continue” Improve spatial-temporal reasoning Creating Music Making music provide many cerebral advantages . Learning to play a musical instrument challenges the brain in new ways. Benefits of Creating Music Improve spatial-temporal reasoning

Does Creating Music Affect Ability in Other Subjects? Music and Mathematics Music and Reading Math and music are closely connected. Concepts that are basic to music : -Patterns -Counting -Geometry -Ratios and Proportions -Sequence Studies suggest a strong association between music and reading. Both involve: -Decoding and comprehension -Sensitivity to phonological or tonal distinction -Simultaneous incorporation and reading of written text with music -Leads to a greater desire for academic responsibility

Helps show relationships and among concepts connect to a key idea. The Visual Arts Increases the brain’s visual processing system but increases retention and improves the quality of life. Helps show relationships and among concepts connect to a key idea.

Movement Movement and the Brain Physical Exercise Improves Brain Performance -Movement activities hold student’s attention for a longer period of time. -Movement activities in school awakens and maintains interest. -Helps students engage other cerebral aptitudes. -Stimulate the right hemisphere and help the student perceive concepts in their totality. -Improve brain performance as Physical activity increases the number of capillaries in the brain facilitating blood transport.
