Parody* A work that imitates another work in order to ridicule, ironically comment on, or poke some affectionate fun at the work itself or the subject of the work. *Parody Cheat Sheet found here.

Parody often mocks or ridicules a serious work of literature, music, artwork or film — for satirical or humorous purposes.

Satire* A work that ridicules its subject, through the use of specific techniques. Although satire is usually witty, and often very funny, the purpose of satire is not 'just' humor but criticism of an individual or a group. *Satire cheat sheet found here.

5 Techniques of Satire* 1) Exaggeration: To represent something beyond normal bounds so that it becomes ridiculous and its faults can be seen.

2) Irony A literary device that exploits a reader’s expectations. Irony occurs when what is expected turns out to be quite different from what actually happens.

3. Understatement The representation of something as smaller or less significant than it really is; the opposite of exaggeration.

4) Reversal: To present the opposite of the normal order.

5) Parody: To imitate the techniques / style of some person, place, or thing in order to ridicule the original. For parody to be successful, the reader must know the original text that is being ridiculed.
