Citing an Online Article Creating A Works Cited

Material You Need Author and/or Editor Names. “Article Name.” (be sure to use quotation marks) Title of website. (NOT THE WEB ADDRESS and use Italics) Posting Date, Volume, or Issue Number. (Written in this order with commas separating) Publisher Name, Copyright Date. (In this order with comma, if none there replace the blank with n,p (no publisher) or n,d. (no copyright) Page or paragraph numbers. URL (Web address in full starting after http://) Date you accessed the material.

Where to find info: Follow the next slides to see examples of where to find each bullet point for a correct citation.

Author and/or Editor Names Usually found at the top. Write them last name first. Widmer, Ted. (notice the comma between and the period after the name)

“Article Name.” Be sure to use quotation marks. “Remembering the Freedom Train.” Again, notice the period at the end.

Title of Website Again, notice the arrow IS NOT pointing to a web address, but the title of the website. The New Yorker. Notice the slanted letters and period at the end. This must be written in italics.

Posting Date, Volume, Issue. This could be at the end of the article or top. Check both locations. This only says 5:00 am, meaning of the day I was reading it. So I would record it as: 26 Nov 2017.

Publisher Name, Publishing Date. This is at the bottom of the webpage or homepage. Conde Nast, 2017. If there was no publisher it would be: N,P, 2017. No copyright: Conde Nast, N.D.

Page or Paragraph Numbers Usually found as a button at top or bottom of article. If not numbers, skip this. The New Yorker article has none, but here are some indications an article has pages. Arrows: Bubbles at bottom: Back/Next Numbers or Arrows:

URL: Be sure to highlight the entire Copy from www to end: www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/remembering-the-freedom- train. Add period at end

Date You Accessed Be sure to write it as day, month, year. 26 Nov 2017. Add period at end.

Information I collected Widmer, Ted. “Remembering the Freedom Train.” The New Yorker. 26 Nov 2017. Conde Nast, 2017. www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/remembering-the-freedom- train. I am now ready to write it in the correct format.

Finished Citation Format Widmer, Ted. “Remembering the Freedom Train.” The New Yorker. 26 Nov 2017. Conde Nast, 2017. www.newyorker.com/culture/ culture-desk/remembering-the-freedom-train. 26 Nov 2017. DON’T forget to indent after the first line. This is called a hanging indent.
