Presentation transcript:

From a third century tomb in the Roman catacombs. Earliest known paintings of Jesus found in the house-church at Dura dated 235. The church and synagogue were against the wall and were filled with earth to strengthen it before the Persian invasion in 256. Excavated in 1920-30.

The shroud of Turin is a clever Medieval forgery painted as a negative image! The genius of the artist led to its veneration until carbon 14 dating of the linen material proved it was a fake.

A common, very white, soft, brown hair parted down the middle. Jesus usually shown as taller and thinner than the apostles. Purported eye witness description now rejected as a forgery.

Diogo Morgado as Jesus The Portuguese actor Diogo Morgado as Jesus (the movie Son of God and the History Channel The Bible). Next role as the devil.

He said “probably dark skin, wide face and short curly hair”. The dark skin came from the murals in the synagogue at Dura which survived the invasion and destruction of 256-7.

The internet's take on the program. The point is we do not know what Jesus looked like and we should not care.

Isaiah 53:2 For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him. We do know something about his appearance!

Would We Recognize Jesus If He Were Among Us Today?

Matthew 7:15 Beware of the false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.

Many People Would Not Because... He demanded judgments be made. Matthew 7:6 “Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet”

Many People Would Not Because... He was not politically correct nor afraid of those in religious or political power positions Matthew 23: eight woes pronounced on “scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites”, “blind guides”, and “serpents, brood of vipers:

Many People Would Not Because... He was truthful, even if it offended his hearers Matthew 15:12 & 14 The Pharisees were offended. Jesus said, “Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”

Many People Would Not Because... He demanded that God be our top priority Matthew 10:37 “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.”

Many People Would Not Because... He showed following Him would be difficult Matthew 23:34 “Therefore, behold, I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city” 2 Timothy 3 and 2 Corinthians 11 remind us of how much Paul suffered
