MicroTouch Capacitive TouchSense® System Tactile Touch for Gaming and Entertainment © 3M 2008. All Rights Reserved.

What is Tactile Touch? Tactile Touch, created by the MicroTouch™ Capacitive TouchSense® System, makes virtual on-screen buttons feel real. It supplies tactile feedback in response to a user’s touch, creating a more intuitive, engaging and natural experience for the player. With this system, a variety of touch-initiated tactile effects can be synchronized with audio and visual prompts, supplying game developers with a new set of interactive tools for greater creativity. How Tactile Touch Works © 3M 2008. All Rights Reserved.

How Tactile Touch Works Tactile system utilizes lateral (X or Y) movement of the touch screen when touched (Z-Axis not supported) Small displacement (<0.020”) with high acceleration causes skin on finger to stretch Integrations are insensitive to finger pressure causing consistent tactile effects © 3M 2008. Tactile Touch Components Purchase kits only, cannot purchase items separately. All kits start with 98-xxxx-xxxx-xx Kits include (3 components) modified CTII Touch Screen containing mechanical strain relief (clip) and part numbers end in -99 Controller, EXII-9710UC or EXII-9720SC # of actuators (31358) depending on size of Touch Screen. © 3M 2008. Sample Gaskets in Stock Gaskets – for small quantities, not for production 35016 – 4926 VHB 3/8”wide - $85.16/roll 35020 – Rogers Bisco BF-1000 ¼” wide - $3/strip 35039 – DuPont Delrin ¼” wide - $10.5/strip 35279 - 468MP transfer adhesive - $34.36/roll © 3M 2008. All Rights Reserved.

Tactile Touch Components MicroTouch™ Actuators 2, 4, 6 or 8 actuators (depending on display size) are mounted to the touch screen carrier and create predefined vibration effects based on the game’s play. MicroTouch Actuator © 3M 2008. All Rights Reserved.

Tactile Touch Components Touch Sensor Carrier MicroTouch™ ClearTek™ II touch sensor and MicroTouch actuators are mounted to robust metal frame, which is mounted to the LCD display. Touch Sensor Touch Screen Carrier © 3M 2008. All Rights Reserved.

Tactile System Integration © 3M 2008. All Rights Reserved.

Tactile System Integration - Overall LCD housing needs to be rigid to be able to transmit actuator forces Actuators can be mounted on the sides or rear of LCD Qty of actuators per system depend on total weight of touch screen and carrier/s, each actuator is capable of moving 300-400 grams. Carrier/carriers provide the mechanical coupling from actuators to touch screen. carriers must have sufficient stiffness, thickness & material composition to transmit actuator forces Touch screen is mounted to carrier/carriers which is then mounted to actuators. Tactile system “floats” above the LCD. Seal between touch screen and front bezel Level of sealing will depend on each individual integration and allowable bezel foam compression Bezel foam compression effects tactile output © 3M 2008. All Rights Reserved.

Tactile System Integration - Actuators Actuators are designed for 300 to 400 grams per actuator (non-sealed system) Systems with 4 actuators must not exceed 1600 grams System is comprised of touch screen and carriers System sealing will apply both a resistance and damping forces and need to be taken into consideration for acceptable tactile response Systems with less mass will have stronger tactile effects & visa versa Controller can accept up to 8 actuators Actuators must be aligned/actuated in same direction Actuators are wired in parallel from the controller but have no polarity Actuators in system must be balanced before completing integration Loosen screws that hold carriers to actuators, apply 12-16 VDC to all actuators at same time, tighten screws © 3M 2008. All Rights Reserved.

Tactile System Integration – Actuator Mounting Side Mounting Rear Mounting © 3M 2008. All Rights Reserved.

Tactile System Integration – LCD/Touchscreen Seal Seal between LCD and touch screen is achieved utilizing Delrin (0.010” thick) slides that are adhered to LCD and are between LCD and carriers. Delrin slides are parallel to direction of tactile movement. Delrin is adhered to LCD with 3M 468MP. Bisco BF1000 (0.125” thick) foam that is adhered to LCD and is perpendicular to carriers as well as direction of tactile movement. Adhesive on foam is supplied by manufacturer and is single sided. Adhering foam & Delrin to LCD facilitates easy removal of touch screen & carrier assembly © 3M 2008. All Rights Reserved.

Tactile System Integration - Considerations 24VDC and ~1.25 amp/actuator (4 actuator system ~= 5 amps) Sealing requirements will impact tactile system, need to plan ahead by evaluating entire system with appropriate level of sealing Bisco BF1000 (open cell foam) at 1/8” and ¼” thick have worked well. Acceptable compression levels should be no more than 25% of the gasket Customers will need to determine appropriate sealing for their application © 3M 2008. All Rights Reserved.

Gasket Stack Up Always mount Delrin parallel to movement of Actuators. Mount Delrin only to LCD, 1 layer is all that is needed. Do not compress the touch screen down on the LCD. Allow smooth movement of the touch system over the LCD 3M 4926 VHB mounting tape Bisco BF-1000 foam tape dust seal Delrin low friction gasket for the carrier to slide on © 3M 2008. Tail Considerations Tail should run parallel to the actuator movement Minimize stress on the tail, add loop Do not run tail near backlight inverter Avoid creasing tail near the connector © 3M 2008. All Rights Reserved.
