Presentation transcript:

HLES 2018 RIGA, LATVIA

Cooperation between IOF and event organisers How it’s possible? IOF view IOF events and event sanction fees are major source of income for IOF 35% from IOF budget comes directly from event sanction fees 30% from IOF budget are event related services incl. TV-rights, LiveOrienteering, sponsorship etc. Secure high and consistent event quality via support to the event organisers Event entry - IOF Eventor Event presentation –LiveOrienteering , TV- support to WOC/ WCup organisers Technical support - SEA/EA, Event Advisory team Educational support - HLES

Cooperation between IOF and event organisers How it’s possible? Organisers view Usually organisers Complain on high sanction fees High quality demands from IOF High cost of event organizing Low income from sponsors and Do not fully understand a role of IOF SEA/EA

Cooperation between IOF and event organisers A challenge Our athletes are professionals or semi-professionals and they expect organisers to be on professional level. A solution We need to set common goals and work closely together to achieve them. Minimum goals: High quality event Increase visibility of orienteering locally and globally Economically feasible

Critical to Quality CtQ Leho Haldna, IOF President

Critical to Quality CtQ CtQ on IOF major events: Mapping Course planning Punching Timekeeping Start draw and result management

Critical to Quality - Mapping Mapping quality - how this can be a problem? Main problems: IOF map symbols not followed zero tolerance in the future. Followed by IOF Map Commission Lack of skillful generalization to maintain the clarity and legibility of the map

Critical to Quality - Mapping Mapping quality - how this can be a problem? Main problems: IOF map symbols not followed zero tolerance in the future. Followed by IOF Map Commission Lack of skillful generalization to maintain the clarity and legibility of the map Printing and paper quality Maybe only IOF approved printshops are allowed in the future? Only maps according IOF mapping standards accepted!!!

Critical to Quality – Course planning The challenge: To find the best compromise between top athlete’s expectations how very good course should look like and visibility of our sport to wider public. Main problems: Lack of skillful course setters Especially lack of experience if there is live-TV from event Lack of teamwork Course is never one man show but result of teamwork at IOF major events Course setting team has strong influence and input from IOF SEA/EA, Arena manager, TV-producer

Critical to Quality – Punching and timekeeping The challenge: Many times clearly underestimated area by event organisers Main problems: Understanding of challenges by organisers National event or even national championships level is not enough for IOF major events. Punching system is not always the same as timekeeping system Budget is too small Lack of professional resources Organisers try to use local amateur or semi-amateur resources

CtQ on IOF major events CtQ on IOF major events: Mapping Course planning Punching Timekeeping Start draw and result management ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event arenas (incl. IT-infrastructure) Logistics Accommodation, food Ceremonies etc.

My advice to organisers Map your strenghts and weaknesses Is it possible and resonable to build up competence to the required level? Maybe it’s costly and outcome unknown. Outsource some CtQ services? Find a right people into organisation Preferably team players Motivated and who are able to adapt and learn Invest into marketing and raise money for professional services

Take away Please do not save in Critical to Quality areas Time in planning process Human resources MONEY Enjoy the process and a result – a successful event and come back with new application for IOF event !
