Latitude and Longitude

LONGITUDE Imaginary lines running from North to South that are used to measure distances from the Prime Meridian. (below in red)

Prime Meridian The imaginary line which runs from North pole to South pole through Greenwich, England. It is from this line the East and west are determined.

MERIDIANS Name for the lines of longitude

LATITUDE Imaginary lines running east and west that are used to measure distances from the Earth’s equator

EQUATOR The great imaginary circle around the middle of the earth that separates North from South.

parallels The name for the lines of latitude

Globe A sphere on which a map of the Earth is placed.

POLES Either of the 2 extreme positions north or south on the Earth

DEGREES Units of measurement for latitude and longitude. There are 360 of them in a circle.

CARDINAL DIRECTIONS The four main directions on a globe or map.
