Star Students Math 11/13-11/17 Literacy Calendar Birthdays We completed our Jolly Phonics study of letter sounds, but we will still practice them at school. Please continue to practice them at home daily. Our book of the week is “Moccasins” and our sight word is “at”. We will continue to practice proper letter formation in our “Handwriting Without Tears” book. At home, please encourage your child to write their name with only the first letter capitalized. We will be working on this at school. In Reading Workshop, we will be looking at a new reading strategy that the students can use when they are reading. Students have learned “Eagle Eye”, where students practice using picture clues to figure out an unknown word and “Lips the Fish”, where students look at the first letter of a word and get their mouths ready to make that sound. This week they will learn “Stretchy Snake” where they stretch out a word slowly and put the sounds together to figure out an unknown word. Students have been doing a great job using these strategies independently! In Writing Workshop, students will be working on writing a letter for their parents to be shared at conferences. Math This week students will begin Module 5. Students will be using a pan balance to identify a total that balances two parts. For example, if there are 6 green cubes on one side and 3 red cubes on the other, how many blue cubes will be needed to balance the scale. This can be a very difficult concept for Kindergarteners. Students will be working on this all year to help represent equalities in addition.
