Aim: How are humans adapted for reproduction?
Objective: Understand the major structures of the male reproductive system and explain the functions New Words: Penis, urethra, seminal vesicle, prostate.
Ch. 18 Male Reproductive System. Reproduction  Reproduction results from the union of 2 specialized sex cells- one from the male and one from the female.

A – The reproductive system The structure and function of reproductive organs and gametes and their role in fertilisation Hormonal control of reproduction The biology of controlling fertility Ante- and postnatal screening

KA 1: The structure and function of reproductive organs and gametes and their role in fertilisation (a) gamete production in males Reproduction (c) site of fertilisation (b) gamete production in females

Describe the process of gamete production in the testes. KA 1: The structure and function of reproductive organs and gametes and their role in fertilisation Describe the process of gamete production in the testes. Describe the role of the following structures in sperm and semen production: seminiferous tubules interstitial cells testosterone prostate gland seminal vesicles.

Re-cap! Germline cells Whilst somatic cells eventually form to create the different body tissues, germline cells eventually give rise to gametes (sex cells: eggs and sperm).

Re-cap!

The Male Reproductive System

The Male Reproductive System

The Male Reproductive System Structure Description & function Testes Sperm Semen Seminal Vesicle Prostate Gland Complete your table as we go through the next few slides!

The Male Reproductive System Testes Site of sperm production Sperm production occurs in the seminiferous tubules Manufactures testosterone in interstitial cells

The Male Reproductive System Sperm – Male gamete. Motile (capable of movement) – Need fluid for motility - Need source of energy to move Semen Milky fluid containing sperm and liquid secretions from the seminal vesicles and prostate gland

The Male Reproductive System Seminal Vesicles Produces a liquid rich in fructose (acts as an energy source for sperm) Liquid has hormone-like compounds to stimulate contractions of female reproductive tract (helps sperm reach the oviduct faster)

The Male Reproductive System Prostate Gland Produces liquid containing enzymes to maintain fluid (in semen) at optimum viscosity for sperm mobility.

Summary: The Male Reproductive System Testes produce sperm in the seminiferous tubules and the hormone testosterone in the interstitial cells. The prostate gland and seminal vesicles secrete fluids that maintain the mobility and viability of the sperm. viability seminal vesicles interstitial mobility seminiferous
