Design and Realization of Decoherence-Free Nanoscale Superconducting Qubits NSF NIRT Grant ECS-0608842 The prototype of a superconducting qubit protected from local sources of noise Objective: The logical elements of a quantum computer (a.k.a. qubits) should be sufficiently decoupled from the noisy environment. Our goal is to develop the first solid-state logical qubit that would be simultaneously scalable and topologically protected from environmental noise. Evidence for correlated 4e transport in topologically protected arrays Novel approach: we propose a fundamentally new class of fault-tolerant (topologically protected) superconducting qubits. These logical qubits incorporate error correction at the “hardware” level, due to nontrivial symmetries originating from fine-tuned interactions between nanoscale Josephson junctions. Proof-of-concept experiments: The success of this approach critically depends on the feasibility of fabrication of nanoscale Josephson junctions with sufficiently small scattering of parameters in the regime of moderate quantum fluctuations. We have fabricated the prototype structures that satisfy this requirement. Using the external magnetic field for controlling the strength of quantum fluctuations, we have observed the supercurrent of correlated pairs of Cooper pairs in the absence of conventional supercurrent in the network of nanoscale Josephson junctions. This is an essential test for the proper strength of quantum fluctuations in the device. Panels (a), (b), and (c) show the design schematics and the micrographs of the device and its central part, respectively. An elementary unit of the design is a “rhombus” which includes four nanoscale Josephson junctions (JJs) shown as red crosses on Panel (a). The “heart” of the device is three four-rhombi chains connected in parallel on Panel (c); the Josephson junctions are formed at each intersection between aluminum strips. The chains are included in a superconducting loop with two larger JJs (bigger red crosses on Panel (a)); by varying the magnetic flux L in the loop, one can control the phase difference across the rhombi chains. This SQUID-like device is protected from non-local external noise and non-equilibrium quasiparticles generated outside of the device by two meander-type inductances L and an interdigital capacitor C. The Coulomb effects in the device can be probed by charging the gate capacitor Cg connected to the central strip common for all chains. Panels (a-c) show oscillations of the supercurrent ISW as a function of the external magnetic field. When the magnetic flux through a single rhombus, R, significantly differs from 0/2 (0 is the superconducting flux quantum), ISW oscillates with the period L= 0, where L is the flux through a large (~110 m2) loop of the SQUID-type device (panel (b)). When R is close to half integer of 0 (the so-called frustrated regime), the supercurrent of individual Cooper pairs vanishes, and the observed oscillations of ISW with the period L= 0/2 are due to the correlated transport of pairs of Cooper pairs with charge 4e (panel (c)).
