John 10 - Life to the Full John 10 follows straight on from the discussion about who is blind. but is I think all happens later, at the Feast of Dedication Chapter 10 falls into two main parts Part 1 (vv 1-18) all about sheep and shepherds Part 2 (vv 19-42) a discussion with the “Jews” (authorities) about who Jesus is note the progression in people coming to believe in Him
The Door and the Good Shepherd Jesus is the Door the way in and out hearing and knowing His voice (10:4, 5, 16) see 14:6 I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, no one comes to the Father but by Me Jesus is the ONLY begotten Son - unique (1:14) Jesus is the Good Shepherd good; also attractive, beautiful 12:32 when I am lifted up I will draw all men to myself the Good Shepherd does not flee
Life Abundantly (v10) Comes between the two “I, I Am” statements What is living life to the full? in a worldly view, it usually implies a destructive, or self centred life, partying, thrills etc Jesus wants to give us abundant life this life is only available at the cost of His own see 1:4 in Him was life and the life was the light of men Jesus Himself is the Life a life filled with wholesomeness (see Galatians 5:22-23) eternal, resurrection life see chapter 11 38 references to life in John
Putting down and taking up They have been plotting to take Jesus’ life since chapter 5 Jesus is the Master in each of these encounters Jesus deliberately puts aside His life He puts it aside so that we may receive life He can receive life again because His Father has given Him that authority Jesus is hinting at His resurrection, more to come in chapter 11
The Feast of Dedication Hanukkah - happens around Christmas celebrates Judas Maccabees, 167 BC, revolt against Egyptian Empire the rededication of the Temple a bit of a “Messiah” The miraculous provision of oil The Jews ask “are you the Christ” Of course, they do not like the answer
You are gods 10:30 I and the Father are one 14:8-11 Philip show us the Father It is a quote from Psalm 82 see also Psalm 18:35 you stoop down to make me great Those to whom the word of God came referring to those who received the Law they received a written code The Word of God, 1:1, has come we have received God Himself what greater honour, and responsibility does that place on us seated with Christ in heavenly places (Eph 2:6), joint heirs with Christ (Rom 8:17) living out the abundant life, reflecting His glory
John’s testimony persists John was pointing the way to Jesus literally in the case of Andrew and Philip(?) Even now people are referring back to John his testimony is true, and it persists John was held as being a prophet (Matt 21:26) Does our testimony persist? Is our “life” overflowing?
