Presentation transcript:

The Periodic Table Chapter 4 Section 2 Structure of Matter Each of the more than 100 elements of matter has distinct properties and a distinct atomic structure. All forms of matter are composed of one or more of the elements. f. Students know how to use the periodic table to identify elements in simple compounds. Chapter 4 Section 2

He created the first periodic table Dmitri Mendeleev Russian Scientist who discovered a set of patterns that applied to all of the elements in regards to atomic mass their ability to bond He created the first periodic table

Periodic Table An arrangement of the 100 elements showing a repeating pattern of their properties The properties of an element can be predicted by its location on the periodic table. Arranged in order of increasing _____________. Mendeleev organized his periodic table in order of increasing _____________: The AVERAGE of all of the isotopes an element.

The Periodic Table Elements are organized into rows and columns based on their atomic number.

Atomic Numbers, Symbols and Mass _____________ (the smaller number) is the number of protons in the nucleus. _________ 47 Ag Silver 107.868 ________ ____________ is the all the protons and neutrons added together.

Periods Groups or Families Elements in a period are not alike, but gradually change as you move from left to right. Groups or Families Elements in a group have very similar characteristics i.e. bonding, reactivity, valence electrons

Periodic table is also arranged in classes: Metals, Semi-metals, Non-metals, and Inert gases

The Periodic Table (Webquest!) Start by completing Part 1: The Basics

The Periodic Table: Part 2 Next, with a partner, learn about the metals!

The Periodic Table: Part 2 Cont. Now, learn about the other types of elements!

The Periodic Table: Part 3 Choose an element to learn more about! Check out the picture and video tables to see what is cool about each element. You will be presenting your element!
