THE KEYS TO GROWING LOCAL MEMBERSHIP

KEYS TO SNA MEMBERSHIP 10 Benefits to being an SNA member Recruiting ideas Retaining members School District Memberships Building Chapters Star Club Industry Partnerships Networking Opportunities Social Media Mentoring

10 BENEFITS TO BEING A MEMBER Helping children develop healthy eating habits for the rest of their lives Growing professionally with SNA Earning professional credentials and/or professional certification More money in your paycheck

10 BENEFITS TO BEING A MEMBER Sharing good ideas with others and networking Making new friends Keeping well informed about all national, state, and local info affecting SNA programs and USDA programs

10 BENEFITS TO BEING A MEMBER Strengthening new respect for oneself, other peers, and the field of school nutrition Shaping school nutrition policy Getting big member discounts for meeting registration, trade journals emporium purchases, etc.

10 BENEFITS TO BEING AN SNA MEMBER Having Fun! You cannot beat the networking, the camaraderie and the opportunity to meet new peers

RECRUITING IDEAS How do you succeed at recruiting new members? Try new ideas! Make it fun! Make it valuable!

RECRUITING IDEAS Mix fun with learning Social events like bowling parties, card night, board game night Like a large family network

RECRUITING IDEAS Consider offering free training to members on topics that are mandated Get invited to the Business Administrator meetings in your county or region. Talk up membership in SNA. Take applications for membership! Assign a mentor to a new recruit so they re-up after a year Value: NJSNA provides a sanitation certification training that is required by the NJ Dept of health. It is free to NJSNA members. Consider offering free trainings to members on any topics that are mandated. Others can pay for the training. The cost of the training should cover a new membership cost. This is a great way to get the numbers up. Business administrator: Be persistent. You may have to ask several times before you get on the agenda. Have your presentation ready so you can let them know exactly how much time you will need. It is fun to win something! Give away memberships at meetings. Allow members to bring guests and draw one free membership at each meeting. Based on the configuration of your state more meetings will mean more new members. Complete the paperwork with them and assign them a mentor so they re-up after a year.

RECRUITING IDEAS Honor members who have the highest recruiting numbers at the state conference It’s always fun to win something! Draw one free membership at each meeting Recruit for Loot!

RETAINING MEMBERS SNA’s NEW RETENTION SURVEY Better understanding of why they have not renewed their membership Are there services SNA could offer that would make them reconsider? Opportunity for additional feedback Survey is combined with a membership renewal page on website

RETAINING MEMBERS REASONS FOR NOT JOINING Economy Job Loss Membership requires commitment of time away from family Membership is not valued as offering any benefit deemed as meaningful Idea: offer memberships at half price for new members

SCHOOL DISTRICT OWNED MEMBERSHIP What is SDM? A new look to SNA membership Individual and now… School District Owned (SDM) Membership owned by a school district in the name of an individual Transferable to another employee in same membership category when leaves district Same benefits as individual membership Pilot program

SCHOOL DISTRICT OWNED MEMBERSHIP SNA’s membership will likely increase when school districts are financially stable and can afford to pay the membership dues Advantage that membership at the employee and manager level is more stable Membership is tracked at the national level

BUILDING CHAPTERS Chapter Issues Chapter meetings appear not to be working as a viable meeting option in all areas of the country Scheduled time and travel required are issues Meeting length – Too long/too short Generational issues about meeting topics Not being paid to attend meetings Childcare issues

BUILDING CHAPTERS What works? Divide chapters into larger/smaller regions to address travel and participation issues Involve Districts to plan meetings on a rotational basis – it can get competitive! Have meetings organized by work groups (managers, employees, district directors…) Virtual chapters (CA, WA) Linking meetings to earning CEUs

STAR CLUB INITIATIVE Encourage members to introduce SNA to coworkers and friends Encourages members by recognition of accomplishments at the Star Club Breakfast at ANC Encourages members by recognition of top recruiters during ANC

STAR CLUB Way of recognizing and thanking SNA members who recruit new members and retain members SNA provides all materials to award winners Plaques, certificates, pins Invitation-only Star Club Breakfast at ANC Brochures available via SNA

SOCIAL MEDIA & SNA SNA has a significant presence on social media sites. SNA has over 2,000 followers on Twitter and almost 1,000 fans on Facebook SNA is also on Flickr and YouTube. ALEXIS TAKES OVER

SNA ON FACEBOOK Here’s a look at SNA’s facebook page One thing to consider when you venture into the world of Social Media is that your fans and followers may end up being a different audience than you anticipated, or your audience may differ from one site to another. For example, SNA’s facebook page is primarily utilized by our members and is a great way for members to keep in touch and share good news in a casual format. Facebook and Twitter New avenue to contact younger generations about SNA and the SNA Foundation Become a fan of SNA on Facebook Become a fan of the SNA Foundation Receive updated information from SNA immediately Allows input from friends about news immediately Allows input about new policies immediately from you

SNA ON TWITTER ALEXIS SNA’s Twitter page is followed more heavily by members of the media and by the school meal reform community. As a result, our tweets are significantly different from our facebook posts, and tend to focus more on pushing out our PR materials and messages. Twitter has been a great way for SNA to share positive news about school meals with those who are usually only hearing negative news. We forward news stories featuring successful programs, links to SNA press releases, statistics from SNA research.

SCHOOL NUTRITON COMMUNITY New! An online professional network and community around school nutrition Primarily members-only Beta Site launch in April Like the Facebook of School Nutrition. Just like Facebook, people will have profile pages – but it will be professional – can add colleagues rather than “friends”
