Why do countries go to war? WW1 #11: US Enters War Why do countries go to war? List 3-5 reasons.

War at Sea Britain & Ger blockade (stop ships) to cut off supplies Unrestricted Submarine Warfare: Ger announced that it would sink any ship around Britain w/o warning! Ger subs = u-boats & fire torpedoes

1. Lusitania (the boat) U.S. enters war: British passenger trip w/Americans aboard

Lusitania May 1915, Ger u-boats sink the ship - killing nearly 1,200 ppl, 128 = Americans US was neutral Is this an act of war?

Ger said it was carrying ammunition – which was true! US called for Ger to stop their unrestricted submarine warfare. .and they do… for awhile Telegram from Wilson re: Sinking of the Lusitania Public outrage over the loss of civilian life hastened the United States entry into World War I. Although the cargo list of the Lusitania stated that she carried approximately 170 tons of munitions and war material, this fact was not revealed to the U.S. public at the time. —American Memory: Today in History, May 7

2. Zimmerman Note Feb 1917: Zimmerman, Ger leader, wrote a telegram to Mexico saying that if Mex helps Ger they would get land they lost in US (like NM, Arizona) British intercept it Is this an act of war?

WAR! President Woodrow Wilson declares war US joins Allies in April 1917

Did the U.S. need to enter into World War One?
