Self Determination and other World War 1 Treaties By: Sofia Azcurra, Nika Ambre, Karley Borges, and Katherine Mora
Overview The United States President Wilson wanted to spread self-determination and independence throughout the Habsburg, Turkish and Russian empires. The four following treaties were made with countries who aided Germany in World War One and were created in order to settle the mayhem resulting from the formation of new countries within the empires. Reparations: Money that one country has to pay another as compensation for war damage.
Self Determination When people of the same nationality have the right to form their own nations and govern themselves. It created new nations in Eastern Europe from the Austria Hungary Empire, which created small wars and weaker countries containing minority groups.
Self Determination…...Continuation Challenges? It’s hard for empires to remain in power when multiple ethnic groups want to break away and create nations where their religion is the majority.
The Treaty of Saint-Germain Overview Signed on September 1919 between Austria and the Allied Powers Austria lost Bohemia and Herzegovina It was the start of the independent nations of Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Kingdom of Serbs,Trento, Southern Tyrol, Trieste, Istria,Yugoslavia, and Eastern Glacia. The treaty delegated what land would go to certain countries It tied Austria and Germany to the League of Nations and set strict restrictions on them.
Treaty of Neuilly Overview Bulgaria was an ally of Germany and Austria-Hungary during the First World War and the successful nations had no thought of sympathy towards Bulgaria. This treaty officially ended Bulgaria’s involvement in the war. Between the Allies and Bulgaria in November 1919, after the First World War. Signed at Neuilly-sur-Seine, France.
Treaty of Neuilly….Continuation As a result of the treaty Bulgaria lost land. Reparations were strongly needed.
Treaty of Trianon Overview Signed August 1920- it was a peace agreement to end most allies in Hungary during World War l. It maintained or supervised Hungary’s independence and defined its borders. Associated with Hungary, it stated that Slovakia and Ruthenia would become part of Czechoslovakia where as Croatia and Sloveina would go to Yugoslavia and Transylvania would go to Romania.
Treaty of Trianon...Continuation During the treaty, Hungary lost the land displayed in on the map above, as well as its army, which was reduced to 35,000 people. The country experienced bankruptcy before reparations could be made. The War Guilt Clause was added in order to figure out how much payments Germany would pay.
Treaty of Sèvres Overview Between the Allied Powers and Ottoman Empire. Signed August 1920, after World War One. The Treaty consisted of Turkey losing territory to Greece, Italy, France, and Britain, a strict limit on the Turkish military, Turkey losing of control over their finances and economy, and the lose of control over the Dardanelles Strait.
Treaty of Sevres…...Continuation This resulted in an uproar throughout the Ottoman Empire and forced the Allies to renegotiate due to the rejection of the treaty by Mustafa Kemal. Kemal believed that the former leaders of the Ottoman Empire were at fault for Turkish involvement in World War One. Due to the rejection of the Treaty of Sevres, the Treaty of Lausanne of 1923 was created. Mustafa Kemal
