Science Starter Write a chemical reaction for the following situation. Once written, please balance. Phosphoric Acid reacts with Sodium Hydroxide.

Fe + CuSO4(aq)  Cu + FeSO4(aq) -but- Cu + FeSO4(aq)  no reaction Activity Series Fe + CuSO4(aq)  Cu + FeSO4(aq) -but- Cu + FeSO4(aq)  no reaction How do we know when an element will displace another in a single displacement reaction?

Activity Series Activity Series: a ranking of the relative reactivity of metals or halogens in aqueous reactions. An activity series will tell you if a single replacement reaction will take place. Some single replacement reactions will never take place unless it follows the activity series. THE ACTIVITY SERIES IS ONLY FOR SINGLE REPLACEMENT REACTIONS! -any element in the table will displace ions of the elements below it from aqueous solutions of their salts -metals very high up in the activity series can not only displace hydrogen from an acid, but can also displace hydrogen from water

Activity Series try these: either -complete the reaction or -write no reaction 1. Na + Fe2O3  2. Cu + AgNO3  3. K + LiCl  4. Na + H2O  5. Mg + HCl 

Activity Series Halogen Activity Series: each element can displace the ions of any element below it on the periodic table from an aqueous solution of one of its salts

Activity Series e.g. Cl2 + NaBr  NaCl + Br2 NaCl + Br2 No Reaction

Practice NaCl(aq) + F2(g) → Li(s) + SnI2(aq) → Fe(s) + H2O(l) → Al(s) + HC2H3O2(aq) → CaBr2(aq) + I2(g) → Mg(s) + LiOH(aq) →

Balance the Equations From the equations on the previous slide, balance the reactions that do occur.
