Our teachers? Our schools? Districts? Who is responsible? Our teachers? Our schools? Districts?

To guarantee we support each child, alignment and engagement doesn’t happen in isolation.

KnowledgeWorks Future Forecast Policy Schools Communities Our strategic foresight team creates forecasts on the future of learning, takes deep dives into critical education issues, and suggests ways of translating insights about the future into action today.  We also work with education stakeholders around the county to illuminate new possibilities for learning and for their organizations. These forecasts guide the work of KnowledgeWorks. Policy We educate legislators, policy makers, educators, business leaders and the community at large on future trends in teaching and learning, the need for change, potential policies to adopt and the mechanisms needed to implement these ideas. Schools We change the way teaching and learning happens in our schools though EDWorks early college high schools. We help with the implementation of a competency- or proficiency-based education, which prepares all K-12 students for college and career by ensuring that they proceed through course material at a pace that is right for them. Communities StriveTogether helps community leaders build civic infrastructure to develop accountability, deliver resources, and sustain reform within a community. We assists in the creation of a shared community vision and empowers stakeholders to organize action and investment around data and evidence.

If we want to do “school” differently…

THEORY OF ACTION If we believe that all students must be… Then our system must advance students as they… Which requires a comprehensive system of…

Highly personalized, competency-based learning is: All learners move upon mastery Competencies / Measurement Topics include explicit, measureable, transferable objectives that empower learners Assessment is meaningful and a positive, motivating learning experience for all learners All learners receive timely, differentiated support Learning outcomes emphasize competencies that include well defined depths of knowledge Learning is supported and aligned from cradle to career

NCLB vs. ESSA States Have an Opportunity to Lead What is currently mandated What may be done in the future Yearly student assessment Defined AYP targets Measure effectiveness of highly qualified educators (certifications) Multiple interim assessments Measure individual learner growth Evidence of growth may be partially delivered via portfolios, projects, performance tasks Flexible growth targets to measure personalized learning through competencies Greater flexibility in use of certifications when delivering personalized learning opportunities

Leading to Go Beyond 2nd Order Change Shake up Remove and replace the status quo Expect some things to seem worse impossible Propose new ideas Be future focused Operate Never waiver from strong beliefs Tolerate Transform ambiguity and dissent into empowerment and commitment Talk Live and implement what research and theory talk about Create explicit goals for change a strategic design Define success in terms of goals strategic alignment and results

The future of personalized education is now
