Graduation Requirements Students require 17 credits to graduate from high school. Included in these, are 7 compulsory credits listed below: Grade 11 English 11 (2 credits) Math 11 (1 credit) Science (or approved Technology Course) (1 credit) Modern History 11 (1 credit) Fine Arts/Life Role Development cluster (1 credit) Grade 12 English 12 (1 credit)

Graduation Requirements – cont. In addition to the 17 credits required, students must have the following: Grade 12 English and a minimum of four other credits at the grade 12 level. Success on the English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPA) – or approved Exemption Successfully complete either the Post Intensive French (PIF) 10 or French Immersion Language Arts (FILA) 10 – or approved Exemption All students must complete the two grade 10 Mathematics courses (Geometry, Measurement and Finance 10 and Number, Relations and Functions 10)

French Immersion Certificate Grade 9 Students must do 50% of their course load in French (i.e.) 5 out of their 10 courses Grade 10 Grade 11 and 12 Students must do 25% of their course load in French (i.e.) 5 of their 20 courses Students who satisfy these requirements will receive a certificate of French Immersion at Graduation

French Immersion Program Grade 11 and 12 FI Modern History 112 Fi Biology 112, 122 FI Wellness through Physical Education 110 FI Family Relations 120 FI Language Arts 110, 120 FI World Issues 120 *There may be online course options as well that are offered in French that could be used towards the French Immersion Certificate (ex. this year FI Intro to Environmental Science 120, FI Law 120, FI Writing 110 and FI Co-op 120 are offered online)

French Immersion Certification The number of student at BMHS graduating with French Immersion Certification have been increasing over the past few years: 2017-2018 = 36 students* 2016-2017 = 33 students 2015-2016 = 18 students 2014-2015 = 11 students 2013-2014 = 7 students *36 students are on track to receive FI Certification this in June 2018

Certificate of Second Language Proficiency To receive this Certificate, students must take an oral proficiency interview in grade 12. Students taking a French 122 or French Immersion 120 course will be tested. The assessment fee is waived for these students. There is a fee of $60 (as per Department of Education guidelines) for other students who wish to be assessed. The Certificate states that the student has achieved a level of proficiency as defined by the EECD.

Preparing for Post-Secondary The courses students take will influence the options available to them after high school. Some options for students who wish to pursue a post-secondary education are: Apprenticeship A minimum of Grade 12 or the equivalent to Grade 12 is required to enter into an apprenticeship program. College Requirements vary according to program. University Admission requirements vary but on average you need minimum of 5 Grade 12 courses (including English) in university approved courses. (May need upwards of 6 courses in some universities outside of Atlantic Canada.)

Gr. 10 students going into Gr. 11 Course Selection Students take 5 classes per semester, with English taking up one period each semester. All students take the following: English 111, 112, or 113 Minimum one Math course Modern History 111, 112, or 113 If this was chosen in Grade 10, then the student chooses an elective in its place. Minimum one Science course If this was chosen in Grade 10, then the student may choose an elective in its place. Minimum one Fine Arts / Life Role course Consult selection sheet for list of applicable courses. 4 elective courses Consult selection sheet for list of options.

Gr. 11 students going into Gr. 112 Course Selection Students take 5 classes per semester. All students must take the following: English 121, 122, or 123 Students choose 9 electives. Students on the Calculus 120 Math path will select Pre-Calculus120A, Pre-Calculus120B and Calculus 120 Things to keep in mind: Know the Local Options that you have completed and/or have selected. Only 2 can be counted towards the 17 credits used for graduation. Know the graduation requirements and be sure they are met in what you have completed and have selected. The courses that are selected will have an impact on the post-secondary options available following graduation. Make selections with this in mind.

Use Education and Training to find out information about post-secondary schools including programs offered and links to their websites. Use Employment to help you develop your resume and learn about other employability skills Create a Portfolio (“My Plan”) to store all the information you gather as you explore the website.
