Basic Education Projects Implemented by the MoEVT
GPE The global partnership for education (GPE) is among key partners since 2013 in supporting education development in Zanzibar. GPE first granted the government of Zanzibar USD 5.2 million to execute its three-year education sector plan, ZEDP I from 2014- 2016. Its overall objective was to improve student learning through Expand and strengthen pre-primary programs such as the tutu centers. Additional 120 pre-primary education centers and 550 pre-primary teachers trained. Distribution of high-quality science and math textbooks to all students of std 5 and 6. Provide learning materials for children with special needs Improve accountability of the overall education system.
GPE cont.… Phase 2 support of GPE will start in April 2018 for four years. USD 5.76 million grant approved in December 2017 for Zanzibar The support is completely aligned to Zanzibar's second education sector plan, the Zanzibar education development plan II 2017/18-2021/22 (ZEDP II). The grant focuses on Giving more children in Zanzibar two years of pre- primary education, Helping schools and teachers meet inclusive education standards Expanding the use of high-quality, timely, and evidence- based education monitoring tools.
SIDA SIDA is continuously supporting education in Zanzibar since 2002 to date. Its overall objective was to improve student learning in primary education and strengthen system capacity through Completion and furnishing of classrooms initiated by the communities Education policy 2006 ZEDP I, 2008 – 2016 Develop the ministry capacity through supporting short and long-term training for effective implementation of the sector plan Improve assessment and monitoring system (EMIS, SACMEQ, schools assessment guideline)
SIDA… SISA committed SEK 30 mil (US$ 3.78 mil) to support education in Phase VII. SIDA Phase VII support will start in 2018 for three years. The Zanzibar Education Development Program II (ZEDP II) 2017/18–2021/2022 is the main vehicle in the preparation of Phase VII support. The Grant tends to support Assess and strengthen the capacity of the system for effective implementation of the ZEDP II (Functional Analysis) Support access to quality primary education
World Bank The World Bank support Zanzibar through the Zanzibar Improving Student Prospects This project started in 2016 for five years (2016/17 - 2021/22). US$ 35 million loan approved in September 2016 The support is completely aligned to ZEDP II. The Project focuses on boosting performance in Math, Science and English (MSE) through Training of teachers from Std 5 to Form 2 on MSE Improving infrastructure (Labs, Libraries, Classrooms, WASH facilities) Improved School Autonomy and Learning Environment by providing schools with capitation grant. Systems Transformation (Inspectorate, Examination and EMIS)
KOICA KOICA committed US$ 10 mil. to support Education on improving MSE performance in secondary education focusing on Form 3 and 4. Project under preparation, expected to start 2018 for 5 years.
OFID – OPEC Fund Support education on increasing access through the Zanzibar Third Education Project. Project cost US $ 10.2 mil for 5 years from 2014/15 – 2018/19 10 schools with 12 classroom each and other facilities are under construction through this project
