 What is genetics?  Genetics is the study of heredity, the process in which a parent passes certain genes onto their children. What does that mean?

Will be glued on the right side of your journal Heredity Foldable Will be glued on the right side of your journal

Foldable (Glue on RIGHT side) Fold your sheet of paper in half Fold the sides in so that you have two sides that open Cut each of the top flaps into 4 sections Write the following vocabulary words on the outside (one on each flap): Heredity Traits Genes Allele Dominant Recessive Genotype Phenotype For each word, write the definition and then color/label a sketch

Definitions Heredity: the passage of DNA from parent to offspring Traits: Physical characteristics that are a result of your genes Genes: Chunks of DNA that code for traits; represented with letters of the alphabet Allele: Different version of a gene Dominant (A): a genetic trait that only requires 1 copy (in your genes) to be shown (Ex: Aa, AA will both show the dominant trait) Recessive (a): a genetic trait that only shows if NO dominant gene is present (aa) Genotype: The combination of all of your genes Phenotype: your physical characteristics! An organism’s traits resulting from their genotype
