OPEN HERITAGE A Vision for Participatory Cultural Engagement ECCC Armchair Discussion Open Science February 27, 2017

– Museums Act CANADA AGRICULTURE AND FOOD MUSEUM CANADA AVIATION AND SPACE MUSEUM CANADA SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY MUSEUM “To foster scientific and technological literacy throughout Canada by establishing, maintaining, and developing a collection of scientific and technological objects, with special but not exclusive reference to Canada, and by demonstrating the products and processes of science and technology and their economic, social and cultural relationships with society.” – Museums Act

DELIVERING ON OUR MANDATE Engagement central to our vision We engage through Participatory Heritage

tRADITIONAL STEWARDSHIP OF KNOWLEDGE BREAKING DOWN Historically, museums have provided “expert” interpretation of public history Traditional institutional authority is challenged Digital disruption and social media have transformed expectations

CHANGING EXPECTATIONS Citizens expect participation and engagement External engagement driving new information management requirements Industry moving towards open innovation while public service waits Customers and partners becoming part of content ecosystem Demand for direct access Mobile access anytime, anywhere

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP Institutions must work with world around them Conscious decision to be relevant to and engage with constituents Shared authority A bias toward action

PARTICIPATORY HERITAGE Digital provides the opportunity to create a new type of heritage mandate: participatory heritage Open Innovation Multiple voices Open Dialogue with citizens Crowdsourcing Shared authority

VISION Be global leader in participatory heritage Committed to Government of Canada’s agenda for openness and transparency Provide open access to research and information assets, in keeping with mandate to develop a national collection and foster knowledge Provide access to knowledge we hold in trust for all Canadians Share information holdings on the principle of “open by default”

OUR SUITE OF OPEN INITIATIVES Data Open Heritage Open Archives Open Innovation Collection online Library Catalogue

OPEN HERITAGE Key aspect of how we are tackling Digital Citizenship

OPEN HERITAGE PORTAL documents.techno-science.ca

OPEN HERITAGE USER STORIES: RESEARCHER As a student researcher, I can find the story behind a museum acquisition, providing unique insights for my research thesis.

OPEN HERITAGE USER STORIES: CURIOUS CANADIAN As a Curious Canadian, I can discover the internal information holdings of the museum, allowing me to dig deep into my passion for technology.

OPEN HERITAGE USER STORIES: TEACHER As a teacher, I can discover educational resources that are under development, so I can contact the museum and help shape what will be of value for my classroom.

OPEN HERITAGE USER STORIES: EXHIBITION PLANNER As an exhibit planner, I can see the projects the museum is working on, so I can plan early to bring the exhibition to my science centre.

OPEN HERITAGE USER STORIES: AUTHOR As an author, I can draw upon information that has never been published, allowing me to make Canadian stories of innovation more accessible for everyone.

EXECUTION TACTICS PORTAL PROVIDING ACCESS TO KNOWLEDGE ASSETS Foundation for Open Innovation; Launch as a pilot project LEVERAGING TECHNOLOGIES ALREADY IN PLACE AT CSTMC Information Management foundation (CSTMC’s robust implementation of GC Docs — GoC standard IM platform) Closely manage culture change BUILD ON AND EXPAND NETWORK OF PARTNERS Corporate, Government, and Academic
