IMO FOUNDATION 1948 UN Maritime Conference adopts Convention on the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO) 1958 Entry into force of Convention 1959 First Assembly of IMCO 1982 Name was changed in International Maritime Organisation (IMO)

PURPOSE OF IMO Article 1(a) of the Convention To provide machinery for co-operation among Governments in the field of governmental regulation and practices relating to technical matters of all kinds affecting shipping engaged in international trade; to encourage and facilitate the general adoption of the highest practicable standards in matters concerning maritime safety, effiency of navigation and prevention and control of marine pollution from ships
