Presentation transcript:

Cenozoic Era (Age of the Mammals) TIMEFRAME: 65 million years ago to Present Day Two Periods Tertiary Quaternary

IMPORTANT FACTS: The diversity of life forms increased because of the variety of different animal and plant species that formed. New mammals appeared while others became extinct. Present day Earth is in this era. o A major geologic event of the Cenozoic is the further splitting and moving of continents to their current positions.

Cenozoic Era Tertiary Period (65 MYA to 1.8 MYA) Warm and humid climate

ANIMALS/ORGANISMS (BIOLOGICAL) FEATURES THAT FIRST APPEARED

HUMANS 1ST APPEARED (HOMO SAPIENS)

Animals of the Tertiary Organisms that have been found in the La Brea tar pits of Los Angeles Megatherium, a giant ground sloth (20 ft long).

Animals of the Tertiary Indricotherium, measured up to 13 ft at the shoulder. Diatryma, a giant predatory bird.

ANIMALS/ORGANISMS (BIOLOGICAL) & GEOLOGICAL FEATURES THAT BECAME DOMINANT

FLOWERING PLANTS & MAMMALS BECAME DOMINANT

MAMMALS

WHAT CAUSED THE MASS EXTINCTION?

There have been SOME extinctions CAUSED BY Climatic Changes & Glacier Events (Ice Ages) during the Cenozoic as there were during the Mesozoic and Paleozoic, but not as many animals and plants have disappeared.

The Great Ice Age

Cenozoic Era Quaternary Period (1.8 MYA to Present) The “Great Ice Age”, ice sheets covered 30% of all land Land & ice bridges connected many continents allowing animal migration North American elephants (mastodons, mammoths), giant sloths & armadillos, and saber-toothed cats go extinct. Modern humans evolve, maybe causing the above extinctions from over hunting.

WHAT CAUSED THE MASS EXTINCTION? THERE IS NONE IN THIS ERA!!! WHY OR WHY NOT?

A Sixth Mass Extinction? Are we the cause of a sixth mass extinction that is currently taking place? - YOUR THOUGHTS
