College Education There are more than 2,000 universities and colleges in China. Some are under the Ministry of Education and others are under other ministries. Chinese universities were built or reformed based on the Russian model of the 1950s. A characteristic of this model was subdividing majors,e.g. Math was divided into the Mathematical Analysis, Probability, Partial Differential Equations, etc. In recent years, more reformation is going on and is moving closer to the America model. Currently, however, there are still many more majors in Chinese universities than in the US.

College Education The College Entrance Exams are a very important issue in China. They take place on June 6th, 7th and 8th each year. A “score line” is set for each university after the exam. The exam scores are the only criteria used to determine college entrance. Generally, no other factors are taken into consideration. All good universities are public. Private universities only emerged a few years ago and are usually sub-standard. Good universities charge less tuition and sub-standard universities charge more. College education used to be “Elite education”. The number of college students was very small, and good jobs were guaranteed for them. But starting several years ago, colleges have been expanding and these guarantees no longer exist.

Famous Universities – Qinghua University Was founded in 1911 as “Preliminary School for Those Who Plan to Study in USA”. It has been renamed “Qinghua University” in 1912. Is now famous for science and engineering. Many current leaders in China graduated from Qinghua University, including President Hu Jintao.
