Thousands of people are hurt in kitchen accidents every year Types of accidents Cuts Falls Burns Fires Electric Shock Poisonings Choking Accidents are caused when people don’t know the safe way to work

Safety tips when using a knife Cuts Cuts can be caused by many things. Sharp kitchen tools, such as knives, graters, and the blades in the blenders, are the most common cause. Safety tips when using a knife Always pick up a knife by its handle Keep knives sharp Cut away from your body and other Use kitchen knives only to cut food Wash knives one by one When loading a dishwasher, place the tips of knives and other sharp tools pointing down in the basket

Falls They are the most common cause of accidental death in the home Safety tips Keep floors clean and dry Be sure all rugs have a nonskid backing Use a sturdy stepladder to reach high shelves

Burns Can be caused by hot appliances, hot dishes, and hot food Safety Tips Avoid wearing loose-fitting clothes or long sleeves when you cook Avoid reaching across a hot surface unit. Turn the handles of pans toward the back of the range Open a pan lid by tilting the lid up from the back of the pan Use a pot holder when picking up hot pots

Fire every year, fires and smoke kill many people For a fire to start, you must have fuel, heat, and air Safety Tips Store matches and lighters in a secure place Don’t use aerosol sprays near a hot cooktop or oven If you smell gas, turn off the range Install smoke alarms and keep a fire extinguisher handy.

Electric shock When electricity passes through you body, it creates heat that causes burns inside your body. Safety tips Worn or damaged plugs and cords can cause shock Arrange the cord so others won’t trip over it Don’t overload circuits Do not place appliances near water

Poisonings Household cleaning products such as dish washing detergent, ammonia, window cleaner, and bleach are poisons Poisons can enter your body through 3 routes Nose or lungs Mouth Skin Safety tips Use spray products only in well ventilated area Never mix cleaning products together Store cleaning products in the containers in which they came. MR YUK Symbol > a sticker that helps young children recognize poisons
