Presentation transcript:

What are sustainable cities? Discuss with your group what the word sustainability means. Come up with a group definition. Sustainability means building to meet the needs of people now and in the future, without harming the environment. Rivers, Lakes and Seas

What are sustainable cities? Today we are learning about… How cities have been made sustainable to reduce their environmental impact. By the end of the lesson… ALL can say what sustainability means (Level 3) MOST will be able to describe what makes a city sustainable (Level 4) SOME will be able to explain why certain things are sustainable and others are not (Level 5)

The Green Building at Macintosh Village sets new standards in ecological home design and is one of the most environmentally advanced residential buildings in the country.  Designed by internationally renowned architects Terry Farrell & Partners, features include:  A roof-mounted wind turbine that will generate electrical power for communal areas  Solar energy for hot water generation will be harnessed using roof-mounted panels  The building is designed to achieve a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to that of an average apartment building  Highly efficient communal gas boilers serve the underfloor heating system  Facilities throughout the building will separate waste to maximise recycling  Energy bills will be significantly reduced by a SAP rating of at least 100 and with the majority of appliances being A-rated  There are considerable savings in water consumption, around 40% compared with the average home  On the ground floor of the building there will be a doctors surgery and a nursery school  Contained within a cylindrical drum, the central atrium allows plenty of natural light and ventilation into the apartments and a state of the art computerised system will optimise the control of active elements such as the atrium windows.  In summary, The Green Building is a whole new concept in city living, uniquely eco-friendly and breathing new life into the heart of Manchester.  Flickr User: terry wha 4

3 Turbines for electricity. Sky gardens 3 Turbines for electricity. Windows designed to only let in some of the heat. 4,000 Solar Panels Glass lobby with an environmental information centre. Lighthouse Tower in Dubai – Artists Impression. Was due to be completed in 2012 but construction has been suspended. Turbines can move to take full advantage of wind. It has reduced it’s energy consumption by 65% compared to a normal tower. Recycled Water (saving 40%)

What are sustainable cities? The diamond cards show sustainability issues in Dubai. Organise them with the most important issue at the top and least important at the bottom. Design a sustainable building – label it to show you have considered the issues identified in your diamond 9 activity. [Think back to what has been done in Greenwich]. Complete the worksheet showing the benefits of sustainable buildings. Textbook work is optional – probably will not be needed. Economic = Money and jobs Social = Anything to do with people. Environmental = Nature and sustainability.
