Electrifying the North East Experience of the Go Ultra Low Bid Kim Farrage North East Combined Authority 15th October 2018

Structure of Presentation Current position in the North East Background to the Go Ultra Low (GUL) programme GUL North East programme Existing EV infrastructure- future plans? Conclusion

Current Position in NECA 328 charge points installed across the region 1st taxi firm to include Nissan LEAF in fleet 43,000 charge point transactions 232 million grams of CO2 saved

Background to the Bid Governmental targets - without intervention the NECA will fall short of target of EV cars. Since the 2009 - Plugged in places project - step change in EV technology; NECA set out a bold mission statement to accelerate the uptake and use of ULEVs across both public and private markets, whilst taking forward research and innovation into a number of new areas September 2015 - bid was submitted to the OLEV as part of their Cities Fund.

Go Ultra Low North East Programme “Going Ultra Low North East sets out a bold and innovative programme to further accelerate the uptake and use of Ultra Low Emission Vehicles (ULEVs), helping us grow the local economy whilst also improving the health of citizens and quality of life.” Received £1.53m from Office for Low Emissions in January 2016 Newcastle University were successful in receiving £1.3m from UKCRIC After submitting a bid in September 2016 to the European Regional Development Fund, NECA has been awarded £1.5m funding to expand the programme

Go Ultra City Areas There are 8 Go Ultra Low Cities including the NECA across the UK which were awarded funds to implement measures to encourage a step change in ULEV take up. Measures which have or are going to be delivered include: Uk’s first EV Experience Centre ULEV access to bus lanes Networks of charge points Residential charging points- on street pilots

Sunderland Electric Filling Station Commercial Venture - Proposals sought for Design, Build and Operate Supports nearby redevelopment proposals in Sunderland To include 6 Rapid and Standard Charging Units with grid supply and potential local energy storage solution Ideally located for Drive In, Short Stay to recharge batteries for both EV and Driver

Sunderland Electric Filling Station

£1.5m European Development Fund to expand the 3 year programme with - 6 clusters of two rapid chargers in high demand locations across the region; Deployment strategy for rapid chargers across the NECA area; An operating and business model to cover the new and existing charging infrastructure; Business engagement mechanisms to encourage SME use of the rapid chargers; An Innovation Accelerator to help SMEs capitalise on the increase in EVs and charging infrastructure; and Targeted marketing and publicity.

Existing EV infrastructure within the NECA Most of the existing infrastructure was installed earlier in this decade and now needs updating or completely replaced Many of the chargers do not now meet European Standards Each local authority and Nexus are currently responsible for their chargers The NECA are currently considering options to bring the existing network together to reduce the costs of running the charging points

Conclusion This is an exciting programme of works for the NECA The NECA are confident that the Go Ultra Low Programme will help deliver a crucial step change in the uptake of EV’s If successful it will bring about a wealth of benefits crossing many policy areas; The research will help to deliver the next generation of technology Thank you for your time- any questions!!
