How would you describe “grit”? Reflection #1 How would you describe “grit”?

Elements of Grit Interest Practice Purpose Hope

Our Ah-ha! This applies to us! Teaching takes GRIT! In order for us to cultivate grit in our students, we had to acknowledge and nurture our own sense of grit. Gritty teachers persist longer. Gritty teachers are more optimistic and happy…and their students perform better.

Interest

What might this look like? My discipline in the media Similar to article abstracts 1-2 as dropbox assignments Final one is submitted to discussion Dinner Party Scaffolded delivery over time Students nominate and refine guest list Research and prepare questions Answer questions on behalf of guest Projects/Presentations Allow students to go “deeper” in an area of interest. Work better toward end of course

Practice

What might this look like? Quiz to mastery Useful for knowledge/comprehension Vocabulary building High investment – minimal upkeep Essay Workshops Students write essay Students submit screencast Describe process Reflect & request feedback Instructor provides feedback/instruction via screencast Student re-writes & re-submits paper along with screencast describing how feedback has been incorporated Low stakes  Higher stakes Builds skill over time Expectation is that students skill will progress throughout course, so final assessments are worth greater portion of overall grade Photo by Alexa Mazzarello on Unsplash

Purpose

What might this look like? Wheel Rubric Self-assessment Setting Goals Scenario Letter to the editor Guest speaker Realistic Take on the perspective of a practitioner Guided Reflection Scaffolded delivery tied to content Transform thought from future to present – “I am studying to be” to “I am…” Designed to nurture student’s professional identity and cultivate professional norms, attitude, and ethics Photo by Jeffrey Hamilton on Unsplash

Hope Photo by Michael Mims on Unsplash

What might this look like? Opportunity to practice or re-submit work More than one attempt at summative assessment Drafts of essays and writing assignments Scaffolding more structure into large projects – don’t make assumptions Credit recovery vs. Extra Credit Related to coursework Open to anyone HOTS over LOTS Photo by Nigel Tadyanehondo on Unsplash

What does “grit” mean now? How has your definition changed? Reflection #2 What does “grit” mean now? How has your definition changed? What do you want to try? …or do more?

In Summary…Gritty Online Culture Isn’t one thing… The result of lots of small things Must be explicit to be most effective May not be apparent over the duration of my course Is transferrable “It’s a million things. It’s a million details. It’s substance & it’s style.”
