Deserts cover more than one third of the earth’s land surface . Deserts are very dry places , but they aren’t always sandy-they can be rocky or even frozen. During the day , temperatures can go higher than 50ْC. The hottest temperature ever recorded was 82ْC in the Sahara. At night, deserts get very cold: as low as -21ْC. Deserts are also very windy. Sometimes there are dangerous sandstorms.

Many seeds only grow after rain and they flower very quickly. Some animals never drink, and others have special protection against heat, or cold. The camel is especially well-adapted for desert life, and lives in both hot and cold deserts.
