First Nations Attack on Fort Michilimackinac 1763 Elliot and Christopher

Why did the First Nations attack? They attacked because the British cut off the annual tribute of gifts and trade goods which people rely on, jumped up the price on new trade goods and they frowned on mixing with, or marrying into the native community.

What First Nations tribes attacked? The tribes that attacked were the Odawa, Ojibwe, Potawatomi, Ottawas and the Hurons. The Ottawa chief named Pontiac planned the attack on Fort Detroit and Fort Michilimackinac.

What was happening during the attack? During the attack the First Nations only killed the British and sparing French Canadiens because the most of the French Canadiens were allied with the tribes. Some women in the fort gave tomahawks and knives to the attackers and the First Nations cut down every British they found.

What happened after the fort was attacked? After the fort was attacked the First Nations held the fort for 1 year until the British reclaimed it in 1764. The First Nations captured some British and paddled them on canoe to islands (like Bear Island)that the First Nations claimed and put them into kind of like a prison there.

Did the British rebuild? They did not rebuild but they made a limestone fort on Mackinac Island which was near Fort Michilimackinac. They moved buildings by taking them apart and moving them to the fort and putting them back together there. The new fort was called Fort Mackinac and it was named after Fort Michilimackinac. They ordered the front of the original base to be destroyed.

Was there a treaty or deal made after? They did make a treaty with the First Nations and it is called the Treaty of Niagara in 1764. In the treaty the crown promised to give gifts each year to the nations. That was when the twenty four wampum belt was made. A wampum belt is made of wampum which is a shell bead. The First Nations made them to show their history, traditions and laws. It could also mean peace between two tribes.
