Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Health Sciences

Goal for research and scholarship To advance knowledge through basic and applied health research, especially research focused on the needs of the U.S./Mexico border

The needs of the region The residents of our region suffer from disproportionate rates of asthma, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, elevated blood lead levels, antibiotic resistant infection, and other debilitating conditions.

The College of Health Sciences is uniquely positioned to focus on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of these disorders. Unique expertise in herbal products Plans for a Clinical Trials Center

What will it take? Faculty and staff Facilities Administrative support Access

Faculty and Staff To reach our goal we need the best faculty, individuals with the ability to establish extramurally-funded research programs. We need to provide our faculty with everything they need to succeed, including time. We need innovative approaches to workload allocation, ones that ensure both flexibility and accountability.

Physical facilities We need a building on campus.

Administrative support We need to make the best use of the Hispanic Health Disparities Research Center

Capitalize on our location We need to take advantage of our location by establishing consistent access to underserved populations.

Access Network of clinical and community sites in El Paso and Cd. Juarez

Location for teaching, research and service

Enroll members of the community into a long-term epidemiological study allowing each study to build on the former Establish a database for retrospective and prospective studies Each successive study enriches the database and gives us an advantage in funding competition Use this to build a base in public health

Clinical network advisory board emphasizing the needs of the community
