Essential Question: How do you divide multi-digit whole numbers? Starting from left to right in the dividend, divide the divisor into the dividend to get the first number in the quotient. Multiply this digit by the divisor and subtract the resulting product from the dividend. Then bring down the number in the dividend and repeat this process until all the numbers in the dividend have been divided.

Define the terms divisor, dividend and quotient. Divisor - the number being divided into Dividend - the number you are using to divide Quotient – the answer to the division problem

How can you check your answer? Multiply the quotient by the divisor. If your answer is correct it should equal the dividend.

How can graph paper help you set up and work your division problems? It can help you keep long division problems organized.

Define remainder. Remainder – the number that is left over

Summary: What steps should you use when dividing large numbers?

Essential Question: How do you add and subtract decimals? Align decimal numbers on the decimal points so the place-value positions line up, then add or subtract as you would whole numbers.

How should you align your decimal numbers before adding or subtracting them? Value positions in each number must line up.

Why should you add zeros as placeholders? So that both numbers have the same number of digit after the decimal point.

Summary: What is the most important things to remember when adding or subtracting decimals?

Subtracting Multi-Digit Decimals Find each difference, showing your work completely. 1. 1.0708 – 0.0709 2. 33 – 0.333 3. 43.2 – 2.34

5.3 - Multiplying Decimals Videos & Notes Sum Race Activity Imagine Math

Essential Question: How do you multiply decimals? First, multiply as you do whole numbers, then place the decimal point in the product. The number of decimal places in the product equals the sum of the number of decimal places in the factors.

How do you know where to place the decimal point in the final product? Complete the entire multiplication before placing the decimal point in the final product.

When do you think estimation can be helpful? When the appropriate answer is all that is needed, or when it is a good idea to check for a mistake, such as incorrect decimal placement in a product.

Answers involving money should always be rounded to what place value? Round to the nearest hundredth.

Summary: How do you multiply decimals?

Multiply 12.6 x 15.3

5.4 - Dividing Decimals Videos/Notes Dividing Multi-Digit Decimals Gifts From Grandma

Essential Question: How do you divide decimals? IF necessary, first multiply the dividend and divisor by the same power of 10 so that the divisor is a whole number. Then divide as you would normally do when dividing a number by a whole number, placing the decimal point in the quotient directly above the decimal point in the dividend.

Define dividend, divisor and quotient. Dividend – the number to be divided Divisor – the number you are dividing by Quotient – the result

Why is multiplication a logical way to check your answer? Multiplication is the inverse operation to division.

What is a power of 10? A number such as 10, 100, 1000, or 10,000 that results from 10 being multiplied by itself.

How do you know what power of ten to multiply the divisor and dividend by? Multiply both numbers by the least power of ten that will make the divisor a whole number.

How can you determine which number is the divisor and which number is the dividend when translating a problem? The number after the division sign, ÷, or the number outside the division house,√ ,is always the divisor.

Summary: How do you divide decimals?

Divide 9.75 ÷ 5 4.25 ÷ 0.5
